Photos The 640 Shows Up

I think there was a post on a 60s Buck 110 that had etching on it. Ill have to look it up.

Of course there was. It was on an early 110. They gave up on that method of marking blades because it was a stupid idea that failed.

Like a bloated dead body......it popped to the surface in the 21st Century. Go figure.

i dont mind it myself. its a non issue for me. just curious what it is...laser or some other etching system?

edit part....id imagine Hoyt would be happy his family is still running buck and doing well with it.

Yeah, Makael.........you've sufficiently belabored the fact that the cheap stenciling doesn't bother you.

LOL!

As for the epoxy.......well, you see what I see. No rivets showing, so something must be holding those slabs on.

But, you inspired a thought. Might be useful to some to see a side by side comparison of daddy 124 and his offspring.

Main thing I notice is that the handle of the 640 is slightly smaller and nicely rounded to be more comfortable than this recent iteration of the 124.

howdy folks
well I can tell ya all that most likely hoit woulda approved,,,
esp as it looks a lot like some things his grand son made in the old custom shop
and likely made and traided em away ,,,
there was another feller that also made some knives a little like that
I had one once but there were some that thought it were one guy and some thought it was the other
any way it were a nice big knife but I needed some trable money to get home from Ohio

You must have been trabeling first class.

I agree that Hoyt would be proud of the knife.......but I think he would have put real stamped-in-steel markings on it.

Since you're here, Dave........you've seen a lot of these limited editions.........any idea how they choose total numbers?

They made 259 of these......but why 259?

I know you have a good answer.

My 640 and 212 arrived yesterday. Beautiful knives but so disapointed in the cheesy limiited edition etch on both. Every LE I've bought from Buck in the past year has it. Both Chuck Buck tribute knives and the expen$ive 2017 119 historical set has it also. Hate it so much I'd pay to have it removed if I thought it could be done without ruining the knives. I could do without the serial numbers on the blade but I know that won't happen... least they could do is put it on the pyle side of the tang. I'm ready to stop buying LE knives till Buck starts making them a little classier and leave the cheesy blade etches to Smoky Mountain. Custom shop knives from the 80's, now they were classy and you didn't have to be told in writing. I know I've whined about this before.... rant over.

VR,
Read your COA again...last line tells you why 259.

Right........I totally missed that........I was stuck on that line meaning 640 for 640 years.
:D
So.......640 just means six employees who worked 40 or more years, and 259 is the exact number of years they worked.

That's a lot of years. Some of them must be older than 110Dave.

Maybe the "XL" means Excellent Labor.

Thanks for the explanation.

Well, I actually DID stop buying.......but this one was just too nice to pass up, so I had to just overlook the cheesiness.

For this knife to be perfect it would need the old stamped in the steel "Buck Custom stamp" instead of the ordinary current year marked stamp like it has.

Do they even HAVE these stamps any more? I think you only get them if you buy a build-out made with an old blade.

Then.........it would need a real stamped IN the steel BOS Logo and steel type like they used to do.

The 34 of 259 could be done FAR better than the barely legible scratching that's on there now.

The cheap billboard "Limited Edition" that looks like it was stamped with an ink pad could be totally eliminated. It does nothing but mar a clean blade and make the knife look cheap. Ummmmm........duh.......we KNOW it's a limited edition.

We've been saying this for a few years and Buck just refuses to comprehend it.

Buck, they say the Devil is in the details and the Devil is getting the best of you because you're not paying attention to these details.

IMG_2626.JPG Other than those details.......this is a top of the line knife.......highly desirable and worth every penny of its admittedly high price.

A real jewel. A knife of which to take justifiable pride.

So Buck..........wake up and smell the coffee.

Your lack of attention to detail is making great knives look like crap.
