I know a fellow who got an original ZT-0777 from his wife for a birthday present. The short run/several years delayed looker of a knife was available - from stock at a local store! Gotta pity the pre-order folks left dry on that one. Still, at MSRP of $600 plus s/t, he only looked at it... could never carry, much less use it. He then photo-ed it for a wife-approved sale on evil-bay, where it sold for slightly north of $2k. The buyer got the last new 0777 at the price he bid on it... the seller paid some bills.
My point is that super-MSRP prices are their own reward... if you can afford them and really want the item. My most expensive knife, a CRK 'StarTac' Umnuumzaan, at $432 delivered, was bought to commemorate my first SS retirement check. It, like all of my knives, gets pocket carry time. My Benchmades are users - my 755 is a daily carry. I'd love a bit longer bladed version - but I seldom spend near $200 these days on any knife, so getting one is not likely to happen.
Oh, I do have a custom knife made for me by Benchmade senior knife designer, and Alabamian, Mel Pardue - I'm sure it's market value is north of a kilobuck. Mel made it for me - for a promised bench rifle trade - as a retired college teacher, I could never afford such a beauty. Mel is a super nice fellow - and it was great to see him again at the local store (Mark's Outdoors) a couple of weeks back - he had some super nice knives with him. Fortunately, his wooly mammoth/mastodon ivory scales resist my drool... and it seems to help his Damascus blades..
So, if you can afford it - try waving twelve Benjamins under the dealer's nose... you may just take that rare BM home with you!
