The absolute dumbest thing you've ever done with a knife is.............?

First set of stitches from a knife that I can remember is when I was about 16 and was cutting some reeds with a POS folder. Just sharpened it and it got stuck in a knot, ya did just what you aren't suppose to do. Turned the knife around and cut toward the left hand. Sliced through the left thumb a bit below the nail almost cutting off the pad of that thumb. Several stitches later, back in business.

Got a few stitches when I jammed a 1/2 inch chisel through the side of my left index finger. Just the first of a few left index injuries.

Cut about a half inch off the tip of the left thumb tip cutting building stakes with a hatchet. No stitches, wasn't enough place to stitch. The DR just rapped it in elastic gauze and said good luck. I had luck and it reattached, no problem

Got a close call flicking open my AFCK. Wicked sharp. I flipped it open with my left hand and it got away from me. It was close to my face and when it made a turn it made a half inch jab in the side of my face just to the left of my mouth. Used a few butterfly bandages for a few days and really had no scar.

Got a new Accent and was cutting off one of those plastic bangs you get when you go to a boat show to go an come. Knife slipped, very sharp, and made a nice V cut in the side of my left index finger. Seven stitches later all is well.

Last incident, was the Saturday before Christmas. I was cutting up some raw turkey while doing some cooking. Using a long bladed Cold Steel filet knife and it needed a touch up. I had a set of long crock sticks in a red holder. NO brand name on it. The left stick slipped out of the holder and the single safety rod wasn't safe enough. A 1 1/4" cut right on the top of my left index finger down to the tendon. First thing I did was check to see if it moved. The doctor and I was supprised that I hadn't cut the tendon. He looked quite a while to make sure. Five stitches and it is the first cut that didn't heal well. When the stitches came out only half the cut had closed. Had to keep butterflys on it for seven more days.

My left hand should run in fear every time I take out a sharp implement.

...Damn, it's a GOOD THING that you don't play with chainsaws!.:D..:D.

I was cutting small branches and my cutting hand went a little too far towards the hand holding the branch, and you guessed it, went through the branch and sliced off a sizable chunk of tbe tip of my left thumb. Luckily it looked worse that it actually was (it sure bled like hell though-duct tape baby :D !)

Antdog, I really couldn't see my way clear to give up collecting, using and enjoying knives. The way I see it, over a life time of handling sharp items, that isn't too bad and certainly not enough to keep me from buying more playtoys. At least I can say that after the same length of time using firearms, I haven't shot myself or anyone else for that matter. :)

I hear ya! I couldn't give up my sharp toys either. Thank God you've never had an "incident" with a firearm! I see your point too - over the span of a lifetime, a few injuries isn't all that bad. :D

Here's hoping your wife doesn't have to make any "E-room runs" for a while!

Don -

I had forgotten all about that between-the-eyes incident. Of course, I'm not the one who got the scar. I guess you answered this thread for me.

I cut metal twist ties with my new knife, which then chipped it. A few days later, I tried to throw it at a box which was a foot in front of me, missed and landed tip down ,blutning the tip.

The most dumbest thing I have done with edge tool was to open beer bottle (a kind that requires bottle cap opner) with a knife (which I will not do with my knife, this was old dull knife belongs to my friend.) As a result I have sliced off a chunk of my left ring finger, then I responded with "oh... ouch". Well, to make the accident worst, by the time I have pulled myself together and looking for a piece of my finger my friend's dog Moca ate it off the floor... That was a night I'll never forget. By the way I'm still missing good chunk of my finger print, it never came back to look normal. Ever since the foolish accident responsibility of handling any tools or edge tools become reminder to myself that I need to be specific about what kind of tools or edged tools to perform tasks that is oriented to specific activities.

But still every new aquisition isn't official till it draws a little blood, kinda like a right of passage that has to be constantly reaffirmed

Thats about right for me too..
Probably the numbskull award for me was when I bought a brand new Spyderco Clipit Police Model(serrated)then opened it and touched the tips of the serrations, every so gently, to my finger, and watched the blood oze out where it touched. Then looked at my wife and said " damn, this knifes sharp, not a knife untill you cut yourself with it" and then, like a dufus, feather "touched" my palm with the blade. I thought it was quite interesting to see the dot to dot pattern slowly develop from all the tips of the serrations.
I have had many beautiful custon knifes over the years, some extremely scary sharp, but as a mass produced blade, the Spyderco has been the most sharp by far. Honorable mention to Cold Steel.
