The Advantages/Disadvantages of LARGE Folders

I carry what I'm most comfortable with and what works the best for me. I EDC a Spyderco Police 3.

For a while I felt the ideal blade size was a Caly 3. But comparing one to a Police I found the latter did certain things better. Was much better for food prep which I use my folders for frequently, it offered more blade length to dull which means better edge retention and more slicing power per cut, and it hacks annoying thorn branches out of the way better.

I view the larger knives as more versatile. I don't find my smaller knives to do things better than my Police, except controlling the tip when slicing the tape on a shipping box is a pinch easier. Not exactly a difficult task with my Police though, especially using the choil and putting my index finger on the spine of the blade.

I don't find a Military or Police uncomfortable to carry at all. The Caly 3 carries better, but neither of the 3 feel overly bulky or uncomfortable in my pocket. If you pick a large knife that's designed to be thin, light and comfortable in the pocket, it makes EDCing one much easier. For example the full sized Skirmish gave me the feeling of "too much," but the P3 never does. Both extremely well made, but one is a lot thinner in the pocket.

I also have large hands. I like a big handle that feels roomy, not one that limits me to one grip and can feel cramped, especially during heavier cutting. Choils are nice when you want a little extra control, but I don't like knife handles that only let you use an in-choil grip.

I've also never, ever had a "raised eyebrow," not from co-workers, friends, the public, police officers etc.

I prefer 3.5 - 4 inches. Less than 3.5 inches and it just isn't enough knife for my money's worth. Also, bigger knives are cool. I also like knives that have wider blades, like the Sog Aegis or the Benchmade 14205 (my current favorite). I think the longest blade I own for a folder is about 3.75 - 4" (Kershaw Black Horse).

I carry and use big / heavy folders but can also appreciate a small knife [Tom Brown Scout for one] for fine work.

Let me work something up with it and let's see you 'do-all' guys perform the exact same with a large folder.

Psychopomp, can't remember if you have ever told me where you are in WNC or not, but I also make WNC my home, and agree 100% with the laidback attitude you find in most parts of this fine land. Some this is God's Country; I say it too!:thumbup:

Been in Jackson county since 1999, don't ever wanna leave.

I think the difference there is weight. The Millie while large is very light. Its also very flat, so the two most annoying factors - weight and bulk - are removed from the equation.

I don't find a Military or Police uncomfortable to carry at all.

I like large folders. For my needs, 4" blade is the shortest I am willing to go, 5" being perfect - much easier to slice bread, meat or fruit with that.
I carried an Endura 4, then went to Voyager XL and never looked back. Only thing that I would add to the Voyager would be a wave :D .

A Large Folder is the perfect companion to go with the Slip Joint (Queen Congress) that everyone carries.

You do carry a Slip Joint, don't you? :D
qft (quoted for truth)
I carry a combination: one large, one-hand-opening folder, and one smaller slipjoint. The smaller knife really doesn't take up much space, but it's really handy to have a small blade in a lot of situations (especially social ones). With this combo, I've got the best of both worlds. I can hack & pound all day at work with the big guy, where I often need a large, rugged blade, and I can keep the little one for when I have to come into the office and be in close proximity to the female employees (one of whom saw my Spyderco Chinook and queried "Why do you have a Taliban knife?!?").

I do like my big folders, of that there is no doubt! Though the last few months have seen me carrying a very stout, but smaller knife than I usually do. This past couple weeks have seen me take an Ontario Retribution 1 and modify it to have thinner and flatter scales, while adding a pocket clip that allows for deep carry and tip up. This one has been in my right front pocket for the past two days. It is a big knife no doubt. Blade is 4.5" X .200", handle is 5.5", and weight is 10+ ounces. Has ridden well in the baggy pants I wear with no one the wiser. But it is not the most practical folder to carry!!

Wow... my thoughts almost exactly. I wave modded a set of Retribution 1&2 and they are currently with Reese Weiland to have Emerson style G10 scales and tip up holes and clips added for L/R carry. Only difference is my clips will be positioned approx 1" from the butt to allow a better waving grip.

For my current EDC... I carry a modded Cuda stiletto Maxx and a waved double edged Police.

Thanks for all the responses.

I routinely carry a 5-inch blade, mostly a Gunsite, but I also like the 4-inch Voyagers. I've learned to be discreet and keep a small knife for opening boxes and the like, but larger knives are better for other tasks, including defense and emergency use.

I think some people underestimate the strength of large folders. I've found them to be quite strong and can't think of anything I'd need a fixed blade for that my 6-inch Voyagers wouldn't handle. If I could only carry one knife, it would be a Voyager tanto 4-inch with a half-serrated blade.

The best knife I have is the CRKT S-2 (3.75-inch blade, not 4-inch as previously reported), but I find I like the Voyager series the best. The weight and strength are perfect, and I like the polished blades.

Charlie Mike,

You broke my heart grinding the sh*t out of the beautiful Police 3 - one of my favorite knives. I do understand though buddy, I've checked out your profile and followed the links to your videos etc. and I suppose that says it all.

BTW, I dug your "Predator" mounting of the flashlight, massive cool.
