The Adventures of Pearl !!! Host list post's #22 and #23

Evening all!
Its been a lovely day here in sunny Andover Hampshire, so we thought we would take Pearl out for a stroll with the dogs, to a near by lake.
This where she will be staying.
We live in a typical English Terrace, our house was built in 1927, probably as workers houses, nothings changed then!!

On our way to the lakes, Alfie and Elsa our 2 little rescue Staffies had a drink and a paddle. The water is very clear, good enough for Trout to breed in.

The river winds its way to the lakes, which are protected. A pair of Swans have decided to set up home right on the footpath, she is sitting on 7 eggs!

To stop the spread of weed that comes in the spring, our local Council have been trying a new method.
Plastic bottles attached to each other with rope have been submerged with bales of barley, seems to have worked as last year the lake was full off the stuff.
7.jpg 8.jpg The weed will be skimmed of weed later this month i think.
Pearl was on burger flipping duty tonight, Jan made some beauties for tea
I cooked them outside on a small gas burner so as not to smoke the house out or we would never hear the end of it!!
10.jpg Perfect end to the day
More to come soon, Paul

Nice post. Such pretty countryside.

As we told Earl when he visited, in Georgian times Andover was one of the most important coaching towns in Southern England for over 200 years until the railways came along. The photo is of the Globe Inn which was one of the many coaching houses in the town it was built in 1742.

The Guild Hall stands at the top of the high street. Originally built in 1470 and then rebuilt in 1825.
15.jpg

In front of the Guild Hall is a water fountain built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1887 and give the town people clean water.
10.jpg 16.jpg

At the highest part of the town is St Mary's church. It stands on the site of the original church which was built in 1150, this church was deemed unsafe some 700 years later, however, when they tried to demolish her she put up a mighty struggle and in the end they had to resort to dynamite!!!
3.jpg

Wandering through the grave yard me and Pearl found this grave. It belongs to the first casualty of the Royal flying corps, the forerunner of the Royal air force.

Leaving the church yard we come to the oldest part of the town. Below is a Norman Arch the only surviving part of the old church.

More travels tomorrow. Paul and Pearl

1.jpg Carrying on through the oldest part of town, we stopped to look at these old Jetty front buildings. These were built in this style before bricks became available in sufficient numbers. They probably date to the 1500`s.
The house below was moved from a near by street in order to save it from demolition a few hundred years ago.
2.jpg 8.jpg Tonight i thought we would give pearl a treat, so she helped me in the kitchen to knock up a Chinese dish. Chicken with broccoli in oyster sauce, my favourite!
4.jpg Looks like she made a good job of it! Cheers everyone and thanks for the kind comments.

Great post Paul. Andover looks like a very handsome town. Good to see you've still got the Jubilee fountain in situ; many of them were demolished through the 20th century or moved to be used as non-functional ornaments in public parks.
And only the Victorians could dynamite a Norman church....
Anyway looking forward to your next adventure.

Pearl is here with me, for the time being. Paul sent her back to me, and I'm waiting to hear where r redden r redden thinks she should go next. Perhaps more travels? Or has she earned herself a retirement?

I thought perhaps I should try to touch up/re-ink the scrimshaw, since it's somewhat faded. On ivory or bone, ink seems to act as a stain or dye whereas on plastic, it just sort of sits in the scratches and can fade by oils and handling. On the other hand, it's really not as bad as I thought it would be, and maybe the fading is a "reverse patina" and I should leave it alone.

What does everyone think? Randy?

Pearl certainly looks sharper in the "before"" picture. My thoughts are that if you are sending Pearl out into the World again, "freshen" her up. If she is retiring, keep her hard earned "patina" as is. I agree that it is your call. Regardless, I was honored to host her on her travels.
