The AK Thread

AK's are what got me into guns when I was a kid, and they're where I've put the most energy in learning how to run a gun.

OP, I'd say to keep it as-is for awhile. If you're going to depend on it, stick a sling and a light on it and look around at taking an AK-specific training class. Optics help a ton in low light, but AK irons are some of the best I've used as far as fighting rifle sights go. They're easy to use up-close, in the dark, on the move, in weird positions... They just work, and an optic is the last place I'll address on an AK.

As for mags, I use steel and Circle-10's. No complaints with them. PMAG's, Tapco's, US Palms... all generally functional (I've used a couple of each), but until the Gen M3 PMAG's are proven definitively better than Circle-10's or steel, I'm sticking with the commie mags.

My preferred optic/light/sling setup;

Still, though, my all-around favorite shooter is a plain-jane SGL-21.

Here are two pics of my 10/63 Wasr, first one is when I got it, and second one after I refinished some laminate furniture and replaced the plastic crap.

Nice rifles, everybody. One of my favorite things about the AK platform is that it looks good in either the traditional classic style or as modernized and upgraded. While I love the classic wood stock and iron sights only look, it's easy to get carried away with mods.

This one started out as a basic Wasr 10.

As you can see, the furniture has been replaced with Magpul stuff. I like the extra width of the lower handguard which makes it more comfortable to hold. The Ultimak rail and red dot are there for ease of sight acquisition only, as I prefer the look of the AK with just iron sights.

Ironically it was the cheapest mods that made the biggest difference IMHO. Firstly, I replaced the shepherds hook/paperclip with one of the retaining plates. It is hands down the best $5 I've spent on the rifle as far as upgrades go. Then I rounded the hammer face and polished the bottom of the bolt and carrier that contact it to smooth out the action a bit. Lastly, I filed the notch on the safety lever that passes through the side of the receiver because it was really stiff. These mods didn't really need to be done as far as function goes. They just made the rifle a little more enjoyable to operate.

Stop it, man, just stop it. I had bad results with an AK I owned, and now you're making me want one all over again.

I've never been an AR guy and not really a fan of the 5.56 round though I pondered getting one during the last panic.
Ballistically, the 5.56X45mm is better than the 7.62X39mm. the 5.56X45mm is faster, has a flatter trajectory/less bullet drop, and a longer effective range. The sectional density for all bullet weights in both cartridges suck.

I enjoy both rounds... hah. I definitely need to get a 74 soon though and some 5.45x39mm love. I'll probably just shell out for an Arsenal when I do... I would definitely enjoy owning an Arsenal.

Every responsible gun owner should own an AR and an AK! No need to just pick one side!!

Just took them both out shooting last weekend. Been shooting my AR pretty regularly but I hadn't had the AKMS out for months. Really glad I took it along I love shooting it. Probably more of an AK fan then I am an AR fan to be honest, though I appreciate both for sure. Just put some new stuff on my AR too... Primary Arms Advanced Micro RDS. Push button adjustments and 50,000 hour battery life. Also got a Primary Arms Gen II weapon light and MI mount. 700 lumen light and tough as hell. Really like shooting with the red dot though. Makes everything so much easier. I am a fan of iron sights though believe me. I believe you should absolutely become proficient with your irons before mounting an optic on your rifle.

Or they should own neither.

Neither rifle interests me much, though I can see how they do hold interests for others. I did own a Galil (improved/modified AK) once, but it just didn't hold my interest. Same with a Russian made SKS. Gave it to a friend not long after I bought it.

Well, they interest almost everyone else. Whatever floats your boat though. I love me some FAL and M1A too. Not a huge bullpup fan but I do like the Aug I guess. Shot a few of those. I have a huge interest in all surplus arms too, especially from WW2. I like all guns. I just don't get why people need to hate on certain firearms. Shit is stupid. (Not implying you are doing that at all, just stating in general. Obviously there are a lot of "X vs X" debates regarding firearms that leads to insults and ridiculous back and forth)

Basically all WWI, WWII, and Cold War firearms interest me. I like combloc firearms because they have that mystique to them, the enemies weapon.

Looking nice, those little primary arms red dots will take a beating. I don't know how many times I've landed on mine or dinged it on brush or a rock or two.

Awesome that's what I like to hear. Sure I would have loved to get an Aimpoint T1 or something but aside from not actually needing something like that I just wouldn't be able to justify the price with the money I make. I put that rifle together over the past year as I could afford it. I've read only very good things about the Primary Arms optics so I knew I was going that route for a while.
