AK's are what got me into guns when I was a kid, and they're where I've put the most energy in learning how to run a gun.
OP, I'd say to keep it as-is for awhile. If you're going to depend on it, stick a sling and a light on it and look around at taking an AK-specific training class. Optics help a ton in low light, but AK irons are some of the best I've used as far as fighting rifle sights go. They're easy to use up-close, in the dark, on the move, in weird positions... They just work, and an optic is the last place I'll address on an AK.
As for mags, I use steel and Circle-10's. No complaints with them. PMAG's, Tapco's, US Palms... all generally functional (I've used a couple of each), but until the Gen M3 PMAG's are proven definitively better than Circle-10's or steel, I'm sticking with the commie mags.

Still, though, my all-around favorite shooter is a plain-jane SGL-21.
