THE HOLE! I have lots of models, have previously owned even more models. For me, the opening hole is the only way. I can’t stand thumb studs or flipper tabs, even on the high end $500+ knives.

They aren’t pretty, but they aren’t meant to be. Perfectly functional matter separators is what they are and they excel at it in a way few can.

Also, the owner of the company (Sal) is active here and on the Spyderco forums (as are other employees) and several knives and models have come to exist because of us, the customers, end line users, whatever you want to call us. Sal is also a steel, edge junky so that helps. Who else has a catalog with as many steel options?!

The hole is popular with knife flickers
*Flick flick flick.
Flick flip snap twirl*
But that aside the corner of the hole bites into the thumb and allows for the knife to open easy like

Yeah, sure is. I don’t fidget with my knives. Not really my thing. But… I’m a mechanic and the only knife I can reliably deploy when my hands are covered in oil, grease, coolant, 80-90w, etc… is a Spyderco. I own and have owned more Spydercos than any other brand because of this and it’s spilled over into my blades outside of work as well.

Good heat treat, steels for any need you may have, solid construction snd an owner that listens to customers and actively participates with them is priceless. All good additional things I should point out. Oh… and the SALT line! My personal favorite Spydercos are the pacific salt (both plain and serrated) and the dragonfly salt (also both plain and serrated). Easy to open when your hands are wet or covered in fish guts.

Spyderco has the best serration pattern, period. It’s not hard to sharpen with the sharpmaker either. Yet another good reason why I love them. SERRATIONS!!! (great ones at that)

Some spyderco models like the nightstick have the spyderco hole but its more like a motif in this instance as it's small and serves no purpose

Cuz it’s a fixed blade… it doesn’t need to be opened.

I wish they wouldn’t on their fixed blades but they do. I still love the aqua salt, Bradley junction, Bradley Bowie and the bow river. All EXCELLENT knives.

The hole is in such a place where I question the integrity of the metal strength
A spyderco stainless steel puuko like knife would be much desired
Maybe in 14C28N or magnacut

This thread has got me thinking … which is usually not a good thing. I’ve never been able to get past that goofy thumb hole, consequently Spyderco is one of the bigger brands I don’t have any of. But after reading this thread, I got to looking around at a few to see what, if anything, tickles my fancy. In pouring over different styles, blade steels, locking mechanisms, etc, etc, etc, I landed on a Manix 2, which of course is out of stock at most places. It’s not the bizarro cartoon looking shape, it’s got S30V steel and G10 handles, both of which I like, and it’s not too ridiculously priced. So I axe all ye thumb hole fans, is this a good choice for a heretofore non-Spyderco user to get their feet wet with the brand for a general use carry?

Native 5 lightweight in SPY27. Great ergos and performance plus it’s strong.
People overlook the back lock because it’s not “fidgety” but it works very well.
If SPY27 isn’t your thing there are a ton of steels available for it. Highly recommend it.

Manix 2 was my first and gateway to Spyderco addiction. So yes I would say so.
The lock is stiff/strong, more so than your deka.
I have strong hands so I've always liked it.

I'd go as far as to say it's the ideal choice for a first Spyderco. It was my first, probably because like you it appealed to me the most due to the looks and the lock, but then in practice as well it has always been my favorite, even above the exalted PM2.

So this is a rabbit hole my needs nor my budget really need to go down, but here goes. I started out about 10 years ago with a BM mini-barrage which served my needs for many years, Then I gained a passion for Protech auto's and was perfectly satisfied for several more years. Most recently, thanks to BF of course, I have acquired several other models of folders, such as Benchmade, ZT, Demko, Hinderer and most recently, Chris Reeve.

I have no idea why but the one knife that just never appealed to me was a Spyderco.

Well it's evident from spending any time on this forum that a LOT of people are really passionate about them so I thought I'd attempt to find out why they are so loved. I'm interested in what you like about them. I'd also be interest in hearing from owners that like a particular model or two only and why.
Also, If you were to recommend one model to a friend, which one would it be?

Thanks!

I like Spyderco knives, but I will say the logo is underwhelming. It looks silly to me, like a goofy cartoon spider. That other weird geometric/alphabet emblem they put on the blade is also strange and ugly lol.

But they are probably my favorite folding knives. I like the hole much better than any thumb nub.

Well y’all got me roped in now. Just ordered a Manix 2 from DLT. We’ll soon see what all this fuss is about. It’s got a tough row to hoe, with two Buck Sprints taking up my #1 and #2 carry spots for it to get past to get any meaningful time in my pocket.

Nice! Is the Matrix 2 a movie promotion variant? 😁
