The ancient kami and the magical khukuri.

:
Rudy I have to say that with a mind like yours at 16 you will be able to do anything you want. The mind can train the hands. The learning comes by doing and watching.I wasn't much good with my hands when I was your age either, but I went on to become one of the best automatic screw machine mehanics around. That means I could set them up,run production and if the machine broke I could determine what was wrong and fix it.
I didn't always like my job,but I Loved my work.I had a very satisfiying career and it was good to me. Not many people get to say that.
You will be one that can someday I will bet.

Sound advice, Yvsa, from one who has been there.

The true kami, not the kid making a few bucks pounding steel for a year or two who will move on, but the true kame who was born into the caste and the profession -- that's what it is truly, a profession -- views his work and his lot in life as what God wanted. This gives him a viewpoint which can only help him and as Yvsa said, it is the brain that trains the hands. This is one of the reasons they are so dedicated -- and so damned good at what they do.

See my thread on "Ganga sends me a warning" just in case you have doubts about the magic.

Uncle Bill

Yvsa,
Thank you for the advice. It is very sound as Uncle Bill said and I certainly believe in it. I have experienced it already actually I think. Before I came here I couldn't sharpen worth a darn. However, after listening to the people here I have been able to put a razor edge on all my blades so far.

Also thank you fro the compliment. I hope I can live up to it.

Uncle Bill,
The kamis certainly do have dedication to their profession and it goes to illustrate Yvsa's point even more so. I doubt everyone of them could have been born good with their hands but in the end after many years of learning they all end very skilled.

I believe in the magic Uncle Bill and I am going to read that thread right now.

thanks and take care

P.S. I want to be a neurosurgeon.

That is why you have a high interest in blades, collin. They will be your tool. You would be most surprised at the number of doctors I have as customers. Or maybe not!

Uncle Bill

speaking of magical knives, myths of magical kris (multiple curved dagger.. look it up) has stayed with my culture for a very long time. i was brought up hearing the legends of Hang Tuah, an almost mythical warrior, and his wars with Portugese which invaded my country sveral centuries ago. it was said that as long as he had the magical kris in his hand, no mortal weapon could strike him. fine. so much nonsense i thought. I wasn't really a believer of the legends. one day two years ago however, an incident made me change my mind. my uncle's friend owed him a great deal of money and couldn't pay up. instead he offered my uncle and old kris that supposedly had been in his family for many generations. hmmm... anyway, being a blade collector, my uncle immediately seized the opportunity and took the kris home with him. i don't really know the details but several days later, my aunt, her daughter and her maid came up with strange bruises on their thighs. the family ignored this at first, but later when my aunt got seriously ill and became semi-paralyzed, and her maid had claimed she saw some mysterious creature in her mirror, my uncle took action. the kris was taken to a medicine man, and the truth became known. the kris my uncle had, was used in many wars throughout its existence and had tasted the blood of so many.. the malays in territorial squirmishes, the portugese and the british when they invaded my country hundreds of yrs. ago and later the japanese in WWII. it had what my people called the 'guardian', and it was hungry... for blood. and the gurdian on this kris happened to be a female. don't ask me how the old man sexed it? apparantly she was jealous of the female memebers in my uncles household, so she let loose... when i think back it's strikes me funny how a century old hag.. could still the hots for my uncle... I laugh now, but at the time it was hair raising. my uncle's friend, the owner, didn't want kris after hearing this story. in the end, the kris was banished to and island somewhere. the days of blade fighting has long since gone.. but who knows what's coming along....

the end.

well.. hope this story was entertaining.. it really did happen though... remember that.

Hi All,
Yes demons can and do attach themselves to objects. Those who recognize this a lucky. Many people are decieved by those lying spirits into thinking that they (the demons) are good and helpful, but in the end they destroy those who come to rely on Them.

Collin,
I've been listening to the song of steel for over fifty years and I have yet to learn even a fraction of it's secrets. I'm (that I know of) the 8th. generation of Blacksmiths in my family. Considering how a family follows a trade, I have no way of knowing how many generations were smiths before they left Ireland.

The story of iron is one that you can follow for a life time and always learn something new.

:
I am most certainly glad that my Keris has no bad spirit connected with it.It has a good home with me until I walk on.I do know that the next person that will be its'caretaker will be chosen with care as will be all of my blades.
Some of them like the Keris are very special though and deserve special people to care for them.I would like to find a place that isn't to far away that would perform the cleansing ritual on the Keris though and restore it to its' rightful beauty.
I doubt the cleansing I gave the blade restored it to all it can be,even though it is much better than it was.

One of the neat things about the spirits is when you can get the bad ones to do something good.I have found out it is always really good
when that happens even though it really p/o's the bad ones that done the deed.

I am really glad to know I am not the only one who believes that what are generally known as inanimate objects can take on spirits and personality.
I have a very old Tomahawk that always makes people who are not who they say they are reveal that when they hold it.When Really "Good" people hold it they have no problems.
If they are less than truthful they can't wait to put it down and will keep trying to give it back to me.It can be very funny to watch.

I think we are a forum of believers. rajawali's story was quite interesting.

Dan, my great grandfather and his son, my great uncle, were blacksmiths -- owned and operated a shop on Main Street in Cherokee, Kansas for years. I wonder if my interest in kamis and khukuris is genetic?

Uncle Bill

Uncle Bill,
My history teacher told me the exact same thing and one day you will be able to add me to the list of doctors who buy from you I hope.

Dan K,
You definately have steel in your veins--8 generations is a long time. I don't think anyone will ever completely figure out all the secrets of metal working--way too many of them but I intend to try and find out as much as I can.

thanks to all and take care

Great-Gramp Malachi Slate was a blacksmith in the Paul's Valley OK area, I believe.

I don't know Uncle Bill. It sure would open up the skull pretty easily.

That made me laugh, collin, and thanks. I think you will make a fine doctor. I will give you some sage advice from an old uncle to a young nephew.

Remember, if you become a doctor your mission is to fix people rather than become wealthy which is a secondary consideration. If you perform your mission well your reward will be greater than anything that money could buy. Do not forget this advice.

Uncle Bill

What do you mean Yvsa's people may have heard of Malachi? Two men tried to swipe some hogs from a kid and great-gramps joined the party on the kid's side. His skull did knit back together later, but he never was quite right and they put him in the state mental hospital where he eventually died. After that, Great-grandma Sally Loafman Slate remarried, first to another Slate, and by the time my gramps married my granny, to an indian. I gotta dig that info out, I have his name. Yvsa, we may be able to trace the genes causing your HIKV suceptibility and mine to a common source.

I am glad I could make you laugh Uncle.

Also, thank you very much for the advise. I will treasure it always and never forget it. I will always practice it. Indeed, thank you very much for some good advice from a WISE Uncle to a young nephew.

thanks and take care
