The Annual Morel Thread

Hi folks -

dipbait is right on - this is a great way to save some if you are lucky enough to have excess.

Here in central Illinois it has been warm enough, but not enough moisture.

It rained yesterday and last night, so we may have some popping up.

So far all I have heard of people finding around here are the small greys.

I'll be out tomorrow looking around.

I look for dead trees and then walk an increasing radius circle around the tree until I have exceeded the estimated drip-line of the tree when it was alive.

Then I find the next tree.

Of course I keep my "shroom-eye" out while between trees - you really never know where they'll be, and they are not always where they were last year.

That pretty much my strategy.

The wife got some down in the mountains in WV this past weekend with her uncles. I couldn't go cuz I broke a bone in my foot. Her first time out. She found 11 on her own. Yea I'm proud of her. She can't wait to go back out now.

It's been dry here (SW WV) but I found 2 yesterday.

Hi folks -

It was rainy and cold here, but we went out and found 24 yellows yesterday.

I'll go out again this evening - it should be sunny here today and that'll coax up a few more I hope.

I'll be having some with a filet tonight.....mmmmmmm goood!

**EDIT** Made Filet Mignon with Morel Butter and brandy cream sauce tonight....

I made a drench with half-and-half, egg, salt and pepper - and a dredge with panko crumbs and salt/pepper. If you have not tried panko crumbs, do it!

Then I season my filet with salt and pepper patted into both sides -

Then I fry my morels in a stick of butter on medium heat until golden brown and crispy -

Then I fry the steaks in the morel crunchies and butter....

After I pull the steaks out, I add some half-and-half and a little brandy and bring the heat up and simmer it until it has a creamy consistency, while stirring those little panko and morel crunchies for a nice butter-sauce.

Yum!

Went back out yesterday and found another small one. I left it there in hopes that it'll grow up a little. It's a bit early here. We have rain and cooler temps in the forcast for the next two days. That should help.
