The Appeal of Spyderco - What is it?

Minimalistic
Elegant
High Quality Materials
Variety of blade shapes
Variety of locking machanisms
Variety of color options
Cool factor

When I first got into knives I also saw how much attention Spyderco received and then I looked up their site and other dealers to closely research each model in their lineup and I just didn't "get it" I saw a bunch of weird leaf looking earthy designs with a big hole that did not look tactical, practical or durable.. Well that all changed when I got a Paramilitary 1.. then that lead to several more. I am also a huge Benchmade fan as well and own some other brands too so I am not biased toward them. If you have some money to spend, pick up one of their popular models in the Paramilitary, Sage or other series and try them for yourself. If anything you can always resell/trade it here or put it on the bay.

Excuse me, but can I have some of whatever you've been smoking? The only person I've heard of breaking a Spyderco FRN handle had the blade stuck in the ground and ran over it with a skid steer loader. That was an unlined FRN handle. The lined ones are even stronger. What do you do with a folding knife that could possible exceed the strength of Spyderco's FRN? I would really like to know.

I would like to know too !!

Function over fashion.

Price. Ease of use. Materials. Fit and Finish... All amazing.

I own many knives that I am more attracted to visually, but I always found my paramilitary in my pocket. They are simply awesome knives to edc and use.

Ive recently moved to a paramilitary 2... its close to perfection in my opinion.

(...)I understand that the overall quality is top-notch, such as the traction and blade steel/sharpness (...) I also understand that they are lightweight and thin, which makes them effective for EDC (...)

What was the question again? ;)

Spyderco is a company with alot of fans here and around the world.

Why:

  1. Diversity of design
  2. Collectible
  3. Unique features and materials
  4. Use of colors
  5. Ownership that listens
  6. Functionality in many formats
  7. Integrity
  8. Quality for dollar
  9. Happy customers from great customer service

Handle one...they are super comfy as edc blades. I'm not trying to rip on other companies....but the opening hole, and the overall in hand comfort can't be looked down on. Plus I like the thumb ramp and choil that is given. My favorite knives in the world! Plus they are offered in super steels, and exotic handle materials.

I first heard of Spyderco years ago when some of my friends carried them. they didn't do much for me aesthetically, but once I started to carry one it completely won me over. Great ergo's, great performance - now it's all function over looks.

Here you go

I'm a Spyderco guy because of the hole. It guides your thumb into it if you miss it. Studs do just the opposite...miss them and your thumb slips off leaving the blade only partially open. I never fumble opening a Spydie like I sometimes do with one if the few stud opening knives I occasionally carry.

The thumbhole is smooth, and smooth is fast.

The most glove-friendly knife ever:thumbup:.

Though admittedly, the only knife that truly gives me trouble opening with a glove on is my CRK Sebenza.

But still, what other production company has ever done something quite as exotic as S90V and carbon fiber at affordable prices(not from the secondary market anyways).

I'd say Spyderco's best appeal is their sprint runs:thumbup:. Fresh juicy steels in a nicely wrapped package:D.

I never liked Spyderco because of the design - they just looked goofy (in my ignorant noob opinion). Now I consider them the best folders I have - I'd only consider buying more Spydies if I ever wanted another.

What's the appeal?

Simplicity and Performance

the most important part to this whole thread, as you read responses is: people LOVE their spyderco's.

just ask yourself: "why do so many people feel this way"?. it's for a reason that so many people feel this way. Sal, Eric and company strive to build products for the end user.

I think spyderco knives are buit to CUT things as opposed to desighns that sell but dont cut worth a damn , the models selection is endless . Anyone can find a model that becomes that handy "perfect knife" to fill athier need. You also have state of the art selection of steel and quality heat treatment.
