The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

^ Do you think that the set up would be closer to 15K? Let's see what are the other "spendy" components of such a scenario? Material + labor, I have no idea so I'm totally spitballing, another 5-10K for a minimum run of 25? So at the top end, 25 of us schmucks can pitch in and get ourselves a new Shiv in D3V for around 1K?

Other than that, who cleans your rain gutters and why is the night sky dark?
I would be one of those schmucks, in for a few

There is a vacuum fixture for the scales first op that was turned into something else. The second op fixture isn't any good anymore. The first op fixture for the blade was turned into something else. Same with the beveling softjaws. The biggest thing is the complex fixture for the swedge didn't age well. It got wet in storage and the steel components rusted and the rubber inserts that reduce chatter on the unsupported cut would need to be re-developed. The shipping boards are long gone. The programs were written for a machine I don't have anymore etc.

There is a bunch of stuff that gets made to do a run on a complex piece like that. Some get lost, some get damaged, some get made into something else. The setup is a bear but once it's running you're golden until something wears out but going back isn't always easy on something that hasn't been run in a while. So I'd have to re-create a lot of stuff and rather than re-create something I've already done I prefer to create something new. That said, we are a production machine shop and if a customer were to place an order we'd make it. Setup would be 10-15K, so that first one is going to be a little bit spendy...

Thanks for giving us a peak in to this! Even better news/reminder that the integral shiv is coming. Volume production! Was never lucky or fast enough for the boot daggers to get one direct... a pre-order would be great.

Morning, Nathan. With a folder design, any complications due to size change during D3V heat treat ? Just curious.

Roland.

That is a good question. I'm kind of curious myself. We will limit the initial run to maybe just 100 of them in case we run into issues.

I'm super curious to see how this turns out! Matt Martin from Vehement Knives did a similar-sized run of CPM3V-bladed folders just recently, but he had Medford manufacture them. These two projects made me think of each other because of the 3V folder being something of an uncommon thing.

Nathan, do you have one off Delta 3V blades on your lawnmower?
I was just thinking about this yesterday.
No, but I'm seriously planning to replace the blade on my compound lopping shears with Delta 3V.
Please tell me you use Felco #2s and Hickok loppers? If not, tell me what you have and I’ll switch.

I've had and used micarta and g10 for 17 or so years. (Linnen, canvas, and paper micarta)

No real difference from a clean up standpoint for me.

I've not noted any difference in smell retention, ease of cleaning etc.

If you give me a choice between micarta and G10, I typically choose micarta.

More so if it is a larger knife/chopper.
in small knives it is more of a toss-up.

That said......I still also use wood handled knives that are near 100 years old with no Ill effects....
