The Ax Poll

In this ad they certainly imply that it is true of the Dreadnaught line and specifically of this single bit which isn't a rafting axe.

"hard rounded poll and extra strength in the eye section..."

And they make no such claims for the All American pattern below.

I have a Dreadnaught house axe out in the garage but it's in nice shape and I don't wish to file the poll as a test. I'll have another look at it and see if there's a spot I can sacrifice for science.
They make the same claim in the Plumb Double Life advertisment that I posted(same line?). Which brings me back to my original question. Is it their "Spring Tempered" head or a hardened poll?

Thanks Square I'll test it with a file.
Here is a photo of the poll on my splitting maul after 7 years use. So, what went awry here hard pounding on hard wood? DM

Looks like you have a case hardened tool which has failed. The core might be ductile iron. Is it a Chinese import? A sledge face will normaly mushroom under heavy use but shouldn't ever crack.

S Square_peg ,If I remember it is a Chinese import. So, when our hardware store opens I need to pick up a splitting maul and a wedge. DM
I do not remember how many Woodings-Verona and other US made mauls I have passed this year; they probably end up in scrap yard. At the garage and estate sales nobody buys railroad pics and mauls. Maybe I will grab few in the future in case somebody needs good quality maul. On the other hand, those are heavy and expensive items to ship so maybe it is cost effective to just buy Chinese stuff.
