I've always focused on guns with knives being a very distant 5th or 6th concern. I'm getting more interested and trying to figure out whats what - so please enlighten me with your opinion in this format, since this is what I (and many others) "get".

I'm looking for the basic catergories and however much explanation that may take, and the given "standards" for that catergory.

For example, with guns (IMHO, YMMV, NWEOI)

Pistols -

Automatic - 1911 and Glock
Revolver - S&W 686 3-4" or Ruger GP100 3-4"

Shotguns - Remington 870, Winchester 1300, Mossy 500(590)

Rifles -

Main battle - M1, M1A, FNFAL
Light battle - AR-15, AK-47
Precision rifle - Remington 700, Winchester 70

i.e. The basic knives out there that are proven.

Thanks!

I know, that is why I am trying to figure out what "all" of them are!

FWIW, for those of you that do guns and knive, to give you and idea of my taste - this is my basic inventory of gat-o-matics -

1911s (custom)
Glocks (seven stock, one USPSA gun)
S&W M41 .22

Remington 11-87P
Remington 870
Mossy 590A1

Springfield M1A
AR-15
Remmy 700 .308
Savage 110 FP .308
Ruger 10/22

Those are what I like and use, though I am getting away from the pump shotguns and want one of the Krebs AK series guns.

Actually I'll give this a shot.

Sebenza, one of the toughest framelock folders out there.

William Henry, gave new life to high quality production folders.

Gerber Paul knife, one of the earliest production collaborations.

Spyderco, Worker,(first knife made), Terzuola/Spyderco collaboration,(first Spyderco collaboration), Spyderco Police Model,(one of the best one handed knives for flippin'.)

Bud Nealy Aikuchi,(one of the best concealable knives out there)

Ontario Spec Survival Machete,(nothing more than a sharpened prybar, but it's good at it's job).

Queen D2 Congress,( quality production slipjoint at an affordable price).

Victorinox Tinker (pocket sized Swiss Army)
Leatherman Supertool (belt sized multi-tool)
Spyderco Endura (utility/tactical)
Becker Crewman (camp sized fixed blade)
Martindale machete (trail/yard)
HI khukuri or Gransfors Bruks axe (chopping)

A well made knife, that you are willing to use, break, loose.

Most important, it fits your hand, much like the grip on a pistol, and you are comfortable with using it.

Suggested:

Benchmade AFCK
Buck 110
Strider
Benchmade 940
Sebenza

In my opinion, much like with a carry gun, they get used, the finish wears, and they scratch.

I think it might be a better idea to think in terms of categories:
1) A BM axis lock
2) A Spyderco FRN lockback
3) A Kershaw speedsafe.
4) A good liner lock, probably an SERE or an Emerson.
5) A good larger lockback like a Buck 100 or Case Mako
6) A multiblade slipjoint.
7) A Sebenza.
That would do it for a good starter collection of Folders.

Al Mar SERE 2000.
Spyderco SS SE Police.
Spyderco SS PE Delica.
Cold Steel Vaquero Grande.
Becker BK7.
Camillus CUDA CQB1.
SOG Tigershark (old-style).
Gerber Yari.

Hey Pangris welcome to the area.

Kershaw Leek for small jobs, assisted opener, sharp tip, great little utility knife, cool gadjet factor.

Benchmade AFCK for larger tasks, my favorite handle design, fits my hand perfectly.

Spyderco Civilian for when you need to scare the sheeple;) , great defensive knife design.

Some other makers that it's hard to go wrong with:
Chris Reeve- fine folders, the best one piece hollow handle survival, and combat knives.
Al Mar- quality folders and fixed blades.
Strider- Hardcore knives for hardcore individuals, folders and fixed.
Busse- Bullet proof fixed blades.

Anyway there's lots to choose from, hang out awhile and you'll see that this just barely scratched the surface.

I would say that if I could only have 4 knives to cover all areas of knifetum they would be:
1.Small Sebenza
2.Spyderco Military
3.Busse,what ever one you like best, for me it would be the BAE
4.Case of some sort to cover the slip joints.

Question:
"I'm looking for the basic catergories and however much explanation that may take, and the given "standards" for that catergory."

Answer:
Catagory 1 - Small light weight utility knife for EDC...
- Spydeco Delica, Case Mini Trapper, SAK Soldier model, etc.

Catagory 2 - Large folder for heavier cutting...clip, pocket or pouch carry for convenience when a fixed blade is just too much...
- Sere 2000, Sebenza, etc.

Catagory 3 - Medium (4-5") fixed blade for hunting/survival...
- Fallkniven F1, S1, NL5, Puma Hunter's Friend, etc.

Catagory 4 - Larger (over 6") fixed blade for camping, hacking your way thru the woods, wild bore fighting, etc.
- Trail Master bowie, USMC Kabar, etc.

Catagory 5 - Machetes, Axes & Kukris...

Folders, in no particular order:
CRK Sebenza
Buck 110, in one variant or another
Victorinox SAK, Soldier and Spartan are the basic models
Spyderco, one of the basic models (Worker, Police, Delica, Endura)

These are, IMHO, the folders that have set the standards.

A Dagger
A Bowie
A neck knife
A belt knife (a favorite, fixed-blade companion knife)
A one-hand folder
A pocketknife (any kind)
A hobo knife
A butterfly knife
A push dagger
A switchblade
A sword
A chef's knife
A kitchen knife

Favorites in my collection:

Small folder - Spyderco Delica
Large folder - REKAT Carnivore (out of production)
Neck knife - Fallkniven WM1
4 to 5 inch utility - Spyderco Temperance
7 inch fighter - Randall Model 14
large bowie - Cold Steel Trailmaster
sword - Hanwei Practical Wazikashi (sp?)
khukuri - Himalayan Imports WWII

Knives I would add if I had the money:

3 to 4 inch utility - a Dozier
4 to 5 inch utility - Trace Rinaldi TTKK
7 inch combat/utility - Chris Reeves Yarborough

Everyone ought to have at least one slipjoint.

Everyone ought to have at least one hunter in the four inch blade range. I like a Marbles.

Everybody ought to have at least one locking folder. I like a Buck 110 or for a smaller choice, something from Spyderco.

Everybody ought to have one big chopper. I like a HI Chitlangi or AK.
