The basic knives - what are the "must haves"?

SlipJoint: Queen D2 Canoe
Med Folder: Buck 110
Big Folder: Cuda Maxx

Small FB: (any) Dozier. I rotate between Personal Utility, Slim Outdoorsman and Model 6.
Med FB: Marbles Woodcraft, Frosts Swedish Army Knife.
Large FB: Bruce Evans forged bowie or Martindale golok or Old Hickory

Chopper: Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Ax.

The above work for me ;)

If you are staying in the city, just get yourself a SAK, a Champ maybe. If that's too bulky, then go for a SAK Soldier.

If you venture further afield like the outdoors, supplement your needs with a 4inch fixed blade of some repute, and throw in a machete as well.

Before you buy anymore knives you should own:
a swiss army knife
a leatherman (or equivalent)
a good folder with a trustworthy locking mechanism
a good fixed blade
and a means of sharpening them.

well, all I can say is that knives that you will depend on are serious tools so buy the best you can(i.e. $300 is little to spend if the knife saves your ass).Remember that when you buy quality you will only cry once. With that here is my list.
1.good folder-EmersonCQC7B tanto blade
EmersonMach1-both have tinitride
coating
2.good small fixed blade-David Dempsey
Belt-Sort,DLC coating kydex sheath
tec-lok belt clip
3.lrg fixed blade in go bag in truck
Custom Randall model 14,boarder patrol
handle single nickle gaurd,stainless
blade.
4.multitool-leatherman wave,one handy pal
use it for everything $55 and a deal
I carry a ruger P95 9mm with 2 clips and that is really all I
need in the city or the mtns.

Thanks, RL - saved me some gray matter thinking of these fine entries.

Add to this: Emerson CQC8; Snody custom Ronin; Mad Dog ceramic knife - any one you can get.

BTW, pangris, I would advise taking it slow and read alot before rushing out to buy some knives. Knives are a big subject, and IMO it takes more research to learn how to select a good knife than it does to select a good gun. There is an endless variety of designs and sizes, as well as materials that are used. Then there is the added complication that results from there being both factory and custom knives.

Basic knives, production
Slipjoint V-nox Tinker, Shrade Old Timer stockman
Locking single blade Opinel for onehanded tactical wonder knife just about anything that catches your eye
Fixed blade Mora, I like the rubber handle one the best
Big fixed blade Camillus becker line
All of these are great quality and will be hard to find better at twice or three times the price.

I'd like to thank everyone for their replies. I'm going to gather up what I have and take a photo pretty soon.

Working on a Micro Mini UDT now...
