The battle of the pens (Case 109 vs Buck 309)

powernoodle, all 309s, AFAIK, are made in the good 'ol US of A. You've got some choices between handle scales. Charcoal dymondwood and yellow delrin are being discontinued.

Yellow delrin being discontinued?

Incomprehensible!

Buck customer service says "the model 309 is USA made", so I'm translating that to mean that all of them are USA made.

I wonder if they are doing away with the Chairman Cherry Dymondwood version because I've been wanting to pick one of those up in the 303 Cadet pattern.

Chairman Cherrywood is still being offered. Don't forget about the new brass/rosewood dymondwood offerings.

Odd that you should phrase it that way. I had both a Case pen and a Buck 309. I gifted the Case pen and still carry the 309 on occasion.

The 309 main blade has an odd shape, but I find that it is perfect for a great many cutting jobs. It's almost like having a clip and a Wharncliffe in the same blade.

I really wanted to love the Case, as there are many Case lovers here. Regarding blade shape, I needed to dig out a splinter today, so a sharp, needle-like tip was called for. 309 answered the call with aplomb.

Dog, I went with black plastic as I like that look the best (and it was under $25 shipped).
Can't go wrong with black plastic. SS liners are the strongest of the 3 materials being offered, too. I like how the "hammer and nail" badge is actually bonded to the liner, not the scale.

You are correct.
The 301, 302, 303, 305, 309, and 310 are all US made.
Other Buck slipjoints are imported.

Oh man I didn't not know about this new version but I'm so glad you told me about it! I absolutely love it and it's leaps and bounds better than the Chairman series that I was going to buy. I will be picking up a Cadet version for sure.

Yup, I thought you might like those :) They are handsome!
