Premise: All knives are compromises, a blending of many factors cross-indexed with a price point that ensures a market of some size so the maker manufacturer stays in business.

What are the best fixed bladed compromises for the following environments/scenarios?

Arctic or subarctic long term stay in winter?

Northern temperate rain forest backpacking for the entire month of March?

Camping from beach site to beach site from California to the Olympic peninsula in Washington across the summer. (Take into account the varying laws in place).

A three week training class in a Brazilian stretch of the Amazon in the wet season.

A seven day hike in the Sonoran desert, running low on water on day four.

Bush plane crash survivor on an unidentified Alaskan lake surrounded by wooded "low" mountains in September?

* The arctic and sub arctic (that means northern sweden) :) = Fallkniven F1 in a baldrick + A1 in your pack. This is what the F1 was developed for. No knife with too exposed tang. Leather or zytel sheath.

* Temperate rain forest (that means the rest of Sweden right about now) = Fallkniven F1 in a baldrick + A1 (in your pack) or just an S1. This is what the S1 was made for. Zytel sheath that takes moist and water.

* Camping through the US: Fallkniven U2 IN your pocket (no clips and crap) and a F1 in your pack. Leather sheaths makes the knives look more "friendly".

* Brazil = Fallkniven F1 + A2. The F1 for small to medium work and the A2 for chopping. Zytel sheaths!

* Sonoran desert = F1 or S1. It should not be too heavy to drag along. Zytel or leather sheath.

* Plane crash = F1 or S1 with zytel sheath because of all the water.

To all these alternatives a swedish firesteel and a folding saw makes things alot easier.

There are other Fallkniven knives in the NL series but they have leather handles.

There are naturally other knife manufacturers like Bark river (carbon steel mostly) and others, so this might serve as an indication to the knife size required if you dont like Fallkniven, but who doesn't? :)

Well that sounds like the average year in North Dakota. I would stick with the Navy Seal 2000 and my Stainless light hatchet. Also a good walking stick. Maybe some electric long johns.
