The Beer Scout gets rusted with Lemon juice *pic*

is there any hope for it? or did rust get somewhere bad? all my gecs sit in their tubes, which i suppose in my area is ok

I will have to try vinegar and see if it makes any difference.

Thanks,
bigC

It is acidic and many use it to force a patina. It's good for cleaning rust, but will patina the blade..... a brass brush doesn't scratch carbon steel but may buff polished blades, but it does get the rust off. When done, clean with cool water, dry, then oil well. After that just wipe the blade dry after use (note: if your sweaty shirt is used, salt will be deposited and initiate rust).

Here is how it looks after several attempts to restore the blade

It looks ok. You probably want somewhere between what you have and new? If you do, go to the hardware store, get some Flitz, 2 or 3 good rub downs and you'll be happy with the results.

I'm actually finding this thread quite compelling! ;)

If you're into patinas, that's actually a pretty cool one. If it were me, I'd spend a little quality time on the tang area and within the blade pull, where it still looks kind of grungy. Brass brush or some 0000 steel wool, or even some super-fine wet-dry sandpaper.

That bolster looks like heck but maybe you like it that way. All of it can be remedied with the appropriate use of varying levels of finer and finer abrasives and polish.

As we say here in the south - "that'll buff right out." :)

Not being one to give up I pulled out the Mini Harbor Freight polisher/grinder and with some gray polishing compound they sell at Harbor Freight I went at it for a good 5 min or so.

Here it is now and looking way better. I will have to polish the entire knife to make it all look like new again.

Ok, there's something just wrong about a mirror finish on a Tidioute. I think you may have gone too far! You need to go down a grit or two and try to get that brushed finish back. Or else get out a bag of lemons and start over.

I'm sure it's been mentioned in the 6 pages but try some flitz! It will polish out any forced patina!

Op is going to give the traditionalists the shakes from that polish job though, lol. I like a satin finish myself but to your aid there are quote a few traditionals out there that have mirror polished finishes.

Yes, the ubiquitous Case knife, with rare exception for the few "as ground" models, mirror polish is what you get...ughhh

As a side note, I'm sure that GEC would be happy to tune up your knife back to near factory specs...I would give them a call; that, or have one of the forum member(s) who do re-grinds have a go.
