The beginning and stalemate of my Kershaw Collection (8cr18Mov Budget Buddies)

Oh man, I'm not patient enough to go through all the online reviews and youtube videos again so soon!

For the knives you have (at least in that pic), something like the Lansky should work fine. It may be tricky on the Brawler due to the tanto blade and the SRM-763 due to the more pronounced curvature of the belly. All the others in your collection have a gradual, gentler sweep, which actually should be pretty easy to sharpen on the clamp-type guided sharpeners like the Lansky. I've used a DMT Aligner (similar concept to the Lansky) with pretty good success on such blades.

I kind of wish I had stuck with the budget knives. They sharpen easy and they easily get the job done. You probably have enough knives to last you the rest of your life.

Would it be more damage than good to go with sonething freehand like a norton India stone? I have some junk knives I could practice on. The reviews of sharpmaker vs lansky vs dmt vs galco or whatever just sort of claim they all are great or crappy.

I use everything I have pretty hard so I think I can justify a system. As soon as I decide on one I read something that makes me hesitant. The sharpmaker sounds great but I hear a lot of user problems, the Gatco and Lansky are a little cheaper but I really can't decide. The Gatco is better for me price wise currently. Like a difference of $20.

No experience with that stone in particular but if you are willing to take the time to teach yourself to sharpen freehand you'll be better off then having to rely on a guided system IMO. You'll be able to do quick touch-ups free hand in the field using a pocket stone or diamond rod; never seen a pocket guided system.

I have a lansky and use it on all my knives. seems to work ok, but the angle being so inconsistent is kinda annoying. it does get me pretty sharp edges though. I want to try freehand but haven't gotten around to it.

I am kind of leaning toward the gatco but still didn't pull the trigger on anything.

I had a Lansky, it worked but wasn't close to great IMO and gave too limited options of edge angle, so I gave it away. The only guided system that really impresses me is the Edge Pro Apex. YMMV

Ive been using a stone freehand. Has worked out decent. I used the lansky once, wasnt bad but I dont know if I like it much.

I dont know how you were able to watch any of those at all, just a bunch of chattering Nancies (no offense if youve done a review, unless you talked way too much, Nancy).

A couple more knives a couple more pictures. Not all Kershaws.

I decided I didn't like the ridge height, blade length, and handle length of the Burst, it was a pretty knife but for me that wasn't enough. Sold it and purchased a Black Volt 2 instead.

Brawler, Zing SS, Burst

And here is the new addition to my collect, the Volt 2 along with all his chinese buddies, the small SRM was previously in pictures.

I had a few dollars left in my paypal and wanted something big and sturdy (and cheap) so the Cold Steel Tanto Lite is an addition to my collection. The two longer chinese knives were ordered before my Kershaw bug but took so long to get here.

I'm working on getting a handle of the Gatco Pro sharpening system but so far it's a slow learning curve for me.

For those guided type sharpeners, I actually find it easier to hold the stone stationary and move the knife attached to the base (rather than holding the base/knife stationary and moving the stone). I haven't used the Gatco, but I have used the Lansky and DMT Aligner, both of which are similar in design.

Here's the DMT video that shows the motion (skip to around 2:40). Start slow, as you don't want to have the knife blade slip off the stone and into your hand...
