I have posted this before. I know. After using my Native III most of the weekend while working outside, I only want a FB Native even more. Sal, Kristi, Eric, any chance of this becoming a reality? Anyone else interested? Any way I can turn my Native III into an FB?

Hi Hunter.

Anything is possible. Likelyhood becomes the question. With so many new designs in the works, I'm a bit reluctant to add more to the schedule.

But I can put it on my "project list".

What blade thickness and blade length did you have in mind?

sal

Sorry Sal, squeaky hinge/wheel/whining forums member etc ;) :D .

I've been looking at approximately 4" blade length, probably in between the length of the Native models and 4", not too big. I'm not suggesting a neck knife per se, but I think it would make a great EDC FB carry knife.

Thickness, I am not as enlightened as I would like to be on this issue. I don't want to say educated because, frankly, I am not. This will not be a chopper, obviously, would it be a good idea to use the same thickness as the folder? The edge thickness would certainly serve my needs, my Native III is one of my few folders I really put through the paces.

Steel, I like S30V, but would probably go with VG10 for ease of sharpening, but I guess it depends on where it would be manufactured. My dream fixed blade Native would have D2 or S30V and G10 scales, but practicality comes into play. The current Native III style handle, enlarged somewhat for FB use, with a slight enlargement on the choil. As for handle material, use the same FRN as the current Native III model.

Thank you for at least considering this Mr Glesser.

If anyone else is interested, please post, don't just read this and move on.

I've always liked the looks and feel of the Native and would definately buy one in a fixed blade form. I like pointy knives and feel a FB Native would do well as a Utility/SD piece. Similar to the Ronin except maybe a bit less pricey and hard to find.

I think that would be a great FB knife. I have been EDCing the Native for a couple of weeks now and just love it.

I'd like to see it kept the same size, using the same materials, but make a special sheath that only covers the blade and not the handle. Make the sheath very slim and compact, so the whole package could easily slip into a pocket. Make whatever belt attatchment it has detatchable so people who want to keep it in their pocket or pack could save space and weight.

Just a thought. I personally carry all my smaller FB's in my pocket, sheath and all, and I think this would be small enough for that. Be nice to see a FB with the sheath designed with pocket carry in mind.

Could attempt to solve two problems at once. Make the FB Native approximately the same size as the Native Chief that many were asking for. As for thickness, depends on what everyone wants. Do they want a prybar or a knife.;)

Maybe .5mm extra thickness (relative to the folding Native) is all that would be needed for extra strength. Too much more sacrifices cutting ability.

I like this idea !

I agree. I'd rather Spyderco focus on its incredible roster of innovative folding designs than divert resources to fixed blades. While I really love my Ronin, I'm more glad that it spawned the Yojimbo. There are many custom makers who can make a fixed blade for very reasonable prices. Folders, on the other hand, aren't so cheap.

With the expanding Byrd lineup, some very enticing sprints, and incredible new designs like the P'Kal, I don't think Spyderco need concern itself with more than a few fixed blade designs. I'm interested in the fixed H1 offering though, as it fills an important niche.

Spyderco is my "go-to" folder company. The few fixed blades are icing on the cake, but not what keep me coming back.

native is a perfect edc. so i think fixed native must be edc too. therefore i think blade length must be less then 3.5''

Epoxy in the handle.

That's what I did with one of my Natives. A 440v one. A few years ago.
Why? Because I felt like it.

Just pour epoxy into the handle. I used a good epoxy; can't remember the brand; any good epoxy should work fine.
Some epoxy ended up on the outside of the handle, and that's fine with me.
I wasn't worried about the look, so I wasn't too careful.
The hardened epoxy can be shaped or smoothed out with a file or sandpaper, as necessary.
This sort of thing is easy enough to do, but it's not for everybody.

I made a simple moulded pocket sheath out of 0.060" Lexan polycarbonate. I used Lexan because I had some, and I don't have any Kydex. Lexan doesn't heat mold that well from my rather limited experience with it. But it will do until I pick up some Kydex.

My fixed blade Native works well for me.
I also sort-of flat ground the blade, something I do with a lot of my knives.
And that's it.

The end.

Interesting. Got pics?

Id like to see how a FB Native turns out. Id go with a little longer blade but the handle should stay the same size. S30V and G10 or micarta would be nice.

I agree, I think there are much better folders that spyderco should divert their attention to.
