In the 6-7" blade range, I would go with a fat ASH1 - at .32" thick, it has some significant weight to get the job done.
Also, a HOGB8 is .35" thick with an 8" blade, and it has the comfortable Res-C handle. For heavy chopping, I would definitely recommend Res-C over G-10 or micarta.
