The best combat folder? What do you recommend?

Hey guys,

Thanks very much for some very well-thought-out, nicely detailed recommendations.

A number of you took me to task for not spelling out what I meant by "combat." Point taken. Truth is, when I wrote that, I wasn't thinking that "combat" has a utilitarian as well as a fighting side, and that very few combat knives are not designed to do both.

Perhaps that's what sets the Spyderco Civilian (and the smaller Matriarch) apart: they have a single specialized combat function--to slash. But that's unusual.

I'm familiar with many Spydercos, the Emerson and the Benchmade I mentioned, the CUDA MAXX, various Cold Steel knives (like the Grand Vaquero), the Kershaw Boa, and several high-end automatics.

Perhaps these represent the top of the line when it comes to--let's call them "aggressive"--folders. As I said, I bought a new Strider SnG 5th Generation folder and, as a die-hard fan of Strider fixed blades, was disappointed. The knife wasn't smooth-functioning, and the handle with G-10 grips wasn't all that satisfying to hold.

I was willing to pay $350 to $400 for a really exceptional aggressive folder, but only if it would be of better fit, finish, and quality, and outperform the Spydercos and Emersons out there. Otherwise, what's the point?

Hey Garlic,
Didn't you say you originally had a Chinook 1 but traded for a manix? If so, why?

nope, wasn't me. i never got the chinook, because it's bladeshape isn't as versatile as the manix. the chinook is a great slasher, but its upswept blade doesn't lend itself well to a forward thrust.

I carry a Benchmade 805s TSEK as my "combat folder", and I can't think of much better.

The Cold Steel Vaquero Grande is a pretty cool one, too, as a "fighting folder".

Seriously, just pull that puppy out and watch Mr. Would be Robber pee his pants. I wouldn't get close to someone with one of those without a sword...maybe.

I carry a SOG Flash II daily and have cut and lightly pryed with it and it seems to be holding up okay. For $50 bucks I feel better about abusing it than my Extremas, although that's what they are made for.

On a side note I bought an Extrema M.P.C., tried to take it apart with the supplied allen wrenches and stripped the pivot screw. It's warrantied for life but I have to ship it all the way back to Italy. I guess that's what sucks about buying things from foreign countries. I hope my orders don't come before I get it back, I wanted that puppy to see sand!

Call me crazee but the Benchmade 520 would be a goob piece for someone wanting a hard use knife thjat could turn mean . The Microtech manual Amohibian would also do the trick .
