The Best Movies You've Never Heard Of

There's another thread about good movies, and another one about movie quotes.

I like kind of obscure movies, some indie, some just 'out there'. More than anything, I am a documentary junkie. Tell me your favorite movie that most people haven't heard of that you think I might like. Just one or two, and don't put stupid anime or crap no one has access to. Both are annoying. Here's a couple of my favorites:

Capturing The Friedmans - Documentary about a family whose patriarch and son are accused of child molestation and labeled as pedophiles. Most of the way through the movie I believed the police, but by the end I was convinced these guys had been railroaded.

Glengarry Glen Ross - Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Ed Harris, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Alan Arkin. The cast alone is worth watching. Anybody who has worked direct sales, cold calls, or marketing in a boilerroom setting will enjoy this story of desperate men in desperate times.

Love,Liza - Phillip Seymour Hoffman (just won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Truman Capote.) Following the unexplained suicide of his wife Liza, website designer Wilson Joel turns to gasoline fumes and remote control gaming while avoiding an inevitable conflict with his mother-in-law (Kathy Bates).

Anyone seen these? What else ya got for me?

Great movie! Got the DVD. Jack Lemmon is amazing in this film. They're all great (even Alec Baldwin:rolleyes: ), but Lemmon is amazing. I heard that Alan Alda is doing doing Shelley Levene in the Broadway production. If I'm ever in NYC for some reason, that's one show I'd have to see.

FYI, the washed-up, can't-get-a-break salesman "Gil" on the Simpsons is a tribute to Lemmon in Glengarry Glen Ross.

I would also add that any movie by David Mamet is worth watching. "Spanish Prisoner", "Heist", "Ronin", and "Spartan" are some of my favorites. Especially "Spanish Prisoner", which has Steve Martin doing a great job in a serious role (quite unlike the person he plays in most of his other films).

I like the independant films by Jim Jarmusch. All of these are good, a few are outstanding:
- Down by Law
- Ghost Dog
- Stranger Than Paradise
- Dead Man
- Broken Flowers

I have the VHS are there any features on the DVD worth watching?
I haven't watched them yet, sorry.

"Danelle Does Dallas" is a good one. ;) :D

Hey, where the heck have you been, young lady? And, more importantly, how the heck are you doing? :)

Judas Kiss was pretty good. Carla Gugino was in it, also the hero from Land of the Dead, forget his name. I just bought because of Carla, but was surprised that the story was interesting.

Snatch was pretty good, especially the bumbling pawn shop owners and the getaway driver. My favorite quote from the movie is "Getaway driver? What the f*** can he get away from?"

Lonestar (Chris Cooper)
The Secret Of Roan Inish (I believe this has the same director as Lonestar)
Pump Up The Volume (Christian Slater)
Stealing Home (Mark Harmon and Jodie Foster)
Manhunter (William Peterson) This one was made in the 1980's by Michael Mann (Miami Vice) and is based on the Thomas Harris book "The Red Dragon". English Actor Brian Cox plays Hannibal Lector (long before Anthony Hopkins did) and I have always thought Biran Cox was better at it.

Gunshy is a great gangster comedy, If you fast forward thru most of sandra bullocks scenes.

Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior is IMO the best obscure martial arts movie out there. Tony Jaa does his own stunts and is a mix between Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li. There is one scene where he is doing some acrobatic flips in a chase scene and in the background written on a wall reads "Hey Spielberg, lets do it together." No sexual innuendo there, I'm sure it has to do with Tony Jaa taunting him about the special effects Spielberg uses or something along those lines. A good example of "Engrish"-bad translation

If you liked "Glengarry," you will probably like "The Big Kahuna." Kevin Spacey and Danny DeVito have two of three speaking parts in the movie.

Boaz Yakin's Fresh is a great film, it was unfairly lumped into the "Boy's in the Hood" catagory when it was released. The director went on to make Remember the Titans and Uptown Girls so I don't know what to think of the guy.

I will second The Duellists. loved that movie. There is some cinematograpy here that is forever etched in my memory.

My all-time favorite western is The Culpepper Cattle Company.
