The Best Movies You've Never Heard Of

The Emerald Forest. Based on a true story about an engineer whose son was kidnapped by South American ndns.

Never heard of "Memento" until I read about it here. Great movie that messes with your mind on several levels. Also just finished watching "Four Brothers" after another word of mouth recommend - pretty good gratuitous violence.

This is one I'm not sure of - and I think I have a few more facts than most - see, the middle son (Seth) and I were very close friends when we were in Jr High school - I was at his house almost every day from say, 1974 to 1977 (when they still lived in Flushing - when he moved to Great Neck, it split up, as I had no transport). I do know there were some strange things about the family, and the general take when the story broke was "That could explain a bunch of things" - the youngest son (the one who went to jail) was one VERY wild kid - NO ONE ever baby sat him more than once

That said, I never saw anything, or heard rumors of anything. Having Child Porn mags - that I'm fairly sure was true. If anything else was going on, I think it was probably a LOT (and I mean a LOT) less than what they were tried/convicted for, but that is opinion, and I did not see the facts.

The eldest brother- Dave was fairly cool, and even then a darned good magician - used to practice hours a day. Showed me how some of the tricks were done, and some of them are just amazing muscle control and practice - he could cut a deck at any card he wanted, and shuffle a deck so that the cards were perfectly interleaved

Ran by Akira Kurosawa - I saw it in the theatre in 1985 when it first came out

Then again, just about anything Kurosawa

ok...lets see
I will list these seperately- for those who can deal with subtitles and those who can't:

for those of you who can deal with subtitles:

City of God- every bit as good a gangster film as Goodfellas...and that IS saying something

City of Lost Children- same director as Delicatessen and Amelie- beautiful film and lots of fun...like a modern morbid fairy tale

Old Boy- Korean revenge drama at its best- lots of good fights and sumptously filmed- PLEASE MAKE SURE TO TURN OFF THE ENGLISH DUBBING- its fricking atrocious- leave it in Korean with subtitles on...

Breathless- the French were best when they wanted to be American gangsters

Kung-Fu Hustle- as fun as everyone says it is...

in English no less:

The Firm - the one with Gary Oldman- not Tom Cruise- if you like this you will also like Trainspotting, Nil by Mouth, Football Factory, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Sexy Beast, and Romper Stomper- if you like Romper Stomper you will either like The Believer or hate it...

Miller's Crossing - best movie to drink bourbon by...

Lair of the White Worm- creepy, campy, and Amanda Donahoe

28 Days Later & Shaun of the Dead- best of the recent spate of zombie films...

Taxi Driver & Reservoir Dogs, because I clearly have a problem...

My own "wish I could see it again" would be "Company of Wolves". I saw it back in early 90s, and it really stuck with me. Aside from werewolves and the surreal atmosphere, the movie had so many messages that only resurfaced a while later. Too bad Blockbuster here doesn't have it, and I'm much too cheap for $25 for a DvD of it. I'm partly scared that if I see it again it'll ruin the great impression I have of it.

There are a few others on my "wish to see some day" movie list, but I can't think of the titles right now. Past 11pm, should be in bed.

Oh yes....hell yes. What a great movie.

Miller's Crossing is a great gangster film.

State of Grace is pretty good as well.

And the "Last of the Dog Men" is worth watching.

And for the younger forumites "The Usual Suspects" is worth watching three times!

Hi Danelle, great thread.

Below are some awesome little-known films I've seen in the last 10 yrs or so:

The Indian Runner (Sean Penn's directorial debut...a haunting story, and one of Viggo Mortensen's first roles)
Box Of Moonlight (a cool little story with Sam Rockwell and John Turturro)
Bound ( a very suspenseful lesbian/mob flick)
Lion of the Desert (one of the best WWII movies ever)
Prefontaine (biopic about the famous runner)
A Simple Plan (not too obscure) (the superb Billy Bob Thornton and Bill Paxton)
Pharoah's Army (a superb Civil War era film)
Taking Sides (with Harvey Keitel and the brilliant Stellan Skarsgard)
The Machinist (very recent) (trippy, good story)
Shadowlands (true-life account of a love affair that C.S. Lewis had with an American; tearjerker)
Dagon (weird horror flick)
Frankenstein: The True Story (brilliant made-for-TV 2-parter from the early 70s)
The Other (strange horror film from the early 70s)
Black Robe (about the French missionaries)
The Beguiled (the most obscure Eastwood flick ever; ahead of its time)

I thought the movie Without Limits was a great movie about Prefontaine. Had Donald Sutherland as Bill Bowerman and he was quite good in that.

Recently, The Descent is a good horror movie. Chicks in a cave and getting killed by some creatures.

A favourite of mine is also Stoned Age. Nobody else has ever heard of it but it's just a really weird show and would actually be a superb watch if you're drunk or stoned.

Dark City is also a good sci-fi movie. From the director of The Crow and it has a similar atmosphere to the movie.

Last of the Dog Men was a great movie, really good. Not condescending at all either.

Usual Suspects is an unknown movie? OMFG! Anyone who has not seen it should immediately sign off the computer and go and buy it.

Kaiser Soze! Kaiser Soze!

Although the title is misleading, cuz she only did a sports shop owner... DEBBY DOES DALLAS IS GOOD FOR LAUGHS. DEBBY'S CROSSEYED GLARE REMINDS ME OF THE BEST PLACES I ENTERED... THEN THEY KICKED ME OFF THE SMALL BUS, BUT I GOT THOSE CROSSEYED LOOKS STARING UP AT ME FOR APPROVAL AS MEMORIES WHEN OTHER THOUGHTS JUST SUCK TOO FLIPPIN' BAD.

My favorite indie film is donnie darko. If you think memento is confusing the ending of donnie darko will have you confused for days. It didn't get a lot of attention in america because it came out after 9/11 and it's a about a plane engine hitting a kid, but it's not all that obscure in europe. It's a great movie and everyone should see it. It's the first movie jake gyllenhal or whatever his name is was in.

Has anyone seen the village? I saw this recently, it was pretty good.

84 Charley MoPic( I think that was the name) About a camera man in 'nam. Done up like Blair witch project, from the camera mans piont of veiw. Seemed so real I almost had another heart attack.

"Rozencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" The story of two lesser known characters in "Hamlet". A young Gary Oldman, and Richard Dryfuss are in it, very clever and wry.

I thought the movie Without Limits was a great movie about Prefontaine. Had Donald Sutherland as Bill Bowerman and he was quite good in that.

I liked that one as well. I saw Prefontaine first and, overall, I just thought it was a tad bit better. Both are very good films.

Why are people mentioning films like Usual Suspects? There is nothing obscure or unknown about that. The title of the thread is, "The Best Movies You've Never Heard Of." Not only is Usual Suspects very-well heard of, but it is perhaps the single most overrated movie of the last 20 yrs or so.
