I have used several mail order companies because there are not that many good knife shops in my area. I would recommend one that is the closes to you so that you will not have to wait a long time for the item to arrive. If you happen to have a problem, you can return it back to them quicker for whatever reason. Now if you don't mind paying extra money for next day or 2nd Day AIR services then you can ignore the distance issue. I would rather buy local (same state) just to keep places in business, or else all the cool small places will close down
I haven't had a single problem yet with ANY of the mail order companies - bad news spreads FASTER than good news
I've had good luck with prices and service with "The Knife Center Of The Internet". When I called, a real live person answered the phone and was very helpful in answering my questions. I didn't have to endure a long, drawn out battle with an automated answering machine (I'd rather go to the dentist than deal with a phone machine).
They also advised that they will soon have a system installed that will let you track your order from their web site. It works for me. http://store.knifecenter.com/HomePage.html

Skylands Cutlery treated me pretty well. Their prices tend to be among the lowest, and my order was processed and delivered to me fairly quickly. I'd order from them again, all prices being equal.
Hey guys - there's a whole forum dedicated to this very topic here at BF. It's "The Good, the Bad, the Ugly" forum. It'll tell you all you need to know.
