This is my first post on the forum and I am trying to find a reputable place or person to buy some handle materials from. I like exotic figured woods that are stabilized or don't need to be. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks very much for any input.

Welcome!

Cruiseon over to the knife makrs area and check out shop talk. Read the stickies at the top and there is all kinds of links in there. Most all the major supply houses sell stuff, but if you're looking for stabilized stuff b sure to avoid "home done" stabilized woods.

We'll see if we can get a mod to move this thread for you.

You will find that most of the knife supply catalogs carry good handle material. You want stabilized wood in most cases.

Burl Source is a member here, and has a lot of top grade handle material. He posts in The Exchange, but the sales are actually through his store site. His direct site is:

Aside from the knifemaking shops I would check out local sources. I found a place locally that has nice stabilized burl for knife handles in the $13 range, check your phone book.

Thanks Dave. These are pretty local to me and plan on contacting and visiting them soon. I checked out your site and gallery. Very Nice! I am on my third ever knife and hope to use some type of burl for the handle material and Bad Dog Burl seems like the right place to go. Thanks again.

I enjoy looking for stuff on Ebay.
You can find good deals, but expect to be searching for a longer time.
(I find it relaxing)

I buy almost exclusively from Mark at Burl Source. Great guy, and I love that you can look at exactly the piece of wood you're getting, instead of just sample pics.

I agree. Mark at Burl Source runs a top-shelf operation. Some of the best scale material I've ever seen.

I made my purchase on Saturday from Rob at Bad Dog Burl and it was a great experience. He lives about an hour away and he has such a great inventory and he allowed me to look over everything and choose what I wanted. His prices seemed reasonable and he is a very knowledgeable fellow when it comes to woods and burls. I highly recommend his website and his products. Most are fully stabilized and look great. Got a T-shirt too and now I am part of the pack!

David,

Rob at Bad Dog Burl said to say hi. He has a great shop and lots of nice product and gets more regularly. Found some nice pieces that will make for interesting handles. Thanks again for the recommendation.
