The best sodbuster

The Moore Maker knives don't seem to be sold in too many places on the internet. Any suggestions besides mooremaker.com?

Also I couldn't find any with stag. Is that simply the luck of the draw in finding one used?

I have a 1970 10 dot case that I picked up a few months ago. It locks up hard and I do not want to mess up something this old in such good condition so I will be buying a new case too.

That sounds familiar. I have two large Case soddies, one's a 1970 ten-dot, the other's a 2009. Guess which one's my user? :p

There's a couple of stores on ebay that sell them. Some of the prices are lower than Moore Maker's site.

Is this Solingen steel a carbon or stainless?

That's carbon steel on the Eye Brand knives, and pretty good to boot.

Also what should I look out for when chasing a Vintage Sodbuster online? I'm thinking of putting some money towards a vintage case in CV.
Do the tang stamp numbers (2137, 2138) depict steel or is it the SS/CV that is stamped on the other side?

Thanks

2137 = BLACK synthetic handle on the SMALL Sod Buster
3137 = YELLOW synthetic handle on the SMALL Sod Buster
2138 = BLACK synthetic, LARGE Sod Buster
3138 = YELLOW synthetic, LARGE Sod Buster

If there's an 'SS' after the pattern numbers above, that indicates stainless steel. The carbon steel models will have 'CV' after the pattern number, EXCEPT on older versions (1965 into the '80s, at least), where only the pattern number will be shown. More recent versions (1990s and later) have the 'CV' after the pattern number. In the pic below, the upper knife is a large black soddie in carbon steel ('CV'), but an older 1970 version. Note the pattern number (simply '2138', with no 'CV' following). The lower knife is a current generation large black soddie in stainless ('2138 SS').

On thing you need to look out for on the Moore Maker knives is who made them. Some of the newer ones are produced by Bear & Son, not too good of stuff.
The older ones were make be Queen and if I am not mistaken some were made by Caillmus. The older Eye Brand sodbusters are great, very good carbon steel.
Case CV is good too.

The case sodbuster jr will do everything and anything you need it to do for about $20.00. K.R. Johnson makes a sodbuster that has so much character, you will want to use it all the time and spend 15 minutes wiping it down and sweet hearting it at the end of the day. Either way you go the sodbuster has the guts.

Hi all, as you can probably tell I am a "new user," but I have been reading posts on this site for a long time.

I believe that the case sodbuster jr is one of the best for the money; sure its not one of these sweet expensive custom made ones, but it is excellent for anything you can think of, and for the price, you dont have to feel bad if you scratch it up or anything. It has no blade play, the blades come sharp from the factory (although the bevels can be uneven sometimes), and they can take a beating.

I am old school, so i love carbon steel; when i think of carbon steel i get this warm feeling...however...my beef is the flak that case tru-sharp gets....and im not sure if people are just quoting what they heard from someone else about it not taking a good edge because this knife can get hair popping sharp; as sharp or sharper than the cv ones (with normal sharpening techniques). Anyway here's a pic. If anyone disagrees i am willing to prove my case.
