When looking for a survival knife recommendation, most of the replies you get will be this "badass" 2 lb hunk of steel that can chop down a sequoia tree in two whacks and is practically indestructible. In reality, the best survival knife is the one you have with you. Having an edged tool on you at all times is one of the best things you can do. This gives you options and capabilities that allowed the human race to flourish from the caveman to the great pioneers. You can defend yourself (last ditch option), make tools, and even occupy downtime by whittling which keeps you busy. Your everyday carry knife could possibly be the knife you are going to have when your stranded up the creek without a paddle so to speak. It doesn't matter if it's the blade on your Leatherman Wave, Victorinox Classic, or even Spyderco Military! If it's not on you, then it naturally can't save your life.

I agree. I usually have 2-3 on my person everyday, so, at least I have some choices.

It sort of used to be that way, but most on here usually recommend something more compact. Some crazy folks even suggest a cheap, plain old Mora! Go figure :D

CS Recon 1, CS Lawman, and ESKabar/BK14. I usually rotate out one of those with an Izula also. That's on me. My EDC bag usually has a BK2 and a big knife of some sort, mostly a BK9. Seriously. I like knives.

I was considering a leap out the window of my house if anyone replied to this effect, but then the OP made a preemptive move by using it to answer his own question. Now what?

You see this question all over the internet in every forum dealing with anything to do with survival. You also see all kinds of answers ranging from the "one you have with you" to "any knife will do". In reality there is only one correct answer to the "What is the best survival knife?" question. It's the United Cutlery partially serrated combat tanto bowie with hollow handle. Settled once and for all.

Have to agree with you.In case I ever get sucked up by accident in one of those fire-fighting helicopters and dropped in the everglades,I always wear my 2 pound bowie, carry a fire-steel and big ass tarp.

If I was ever going to be in that type of situation, it would be when I was in the woods. As this is likely to be the case, I always do have a big hunk of steel on me. :p

Hence why I've switched my EDC from a folder to a small fixed blade! Infinitely more versatile when you need it to be.

Actually, IMO the human race fluorished because of the axe. Sure would be nice to walk around town with a tomahawk.:D

If I am in the woods I have a sharpened crowbar on me always.

This may sound totally crazy... ... but I have come to the realization that I can get along just great without all these fine cutting tasks everybody seems to think is so important. In the field, my big honking knife is used for cutting, digging, chopping, hammering, batoning and prying.... I would be hardpressed to replace it, more so than a fine cutting blade.;)

I think it's safe to say most of us on this forum would have our high quality blades with us if we were ever in a self reliance event.
