The best "ugly" knife?

I bought a Spyderco Starmate @ a gun show on the 22nd of Jan. It is a great knife, with very good fit & finish, good edge geometry & is very sharp.
But it is an ugly knife. The blade shape is about as ungraceful as you can get for a knife of this quality. I do like all of the Spyderco's I have, and all of them do have a distinct look but this one is not aestetically pleasing. It does have the best "feel" of any I have & the opening is extra smooth.
I also think the blade might be about 1.5 mm too thick.
Any comments?

I agree with you that Spydercos are not the most asthetic blades on the market, but they are some of the "best bang for the buck" pieces of equipment you could ever buy!

As far as my vote for "good but ugly" take a look at the Benchmade Pinnacle/MonoLock. It's angular. It's grey. It's very stark. It looks like the bastard child of a meat cleaver and an engine block! But despite that it is (in my opinion) one of the solidest and most reliable folders on the market. I have used mine on everything from radiator hoses to the breast bone of a deer and it still looks like it just came out of the box.

I havent had a chance to see the spyderco you guys are talking about or maybe I just dont kno my names, but anyay I agree the BM Pinnacle is great knife but not to eye appealing, it does kinda look like the SEBENZA , please dont jump all over me for saying this all of you SEBENZAHOLICS.....

You have just about summed up the Spyderco 'philosophy' in less than 100 words.

Congratulations, here's your prize... a Toad

Ugly knives ?
I don't know what you blokes are talking about.
I have never seen an ugly knife.
Seen some ugly steels, though....

There's ugly and then there's ugly ... to my eye the Starmate, like other Spydercos, has a special kind of ugliness ... shared with the Volkswagon Beetle (the original one, the new copy doesn't have it), the Sten gun (except the Model 4) ... the Webley Automatic Revolver ... there's a special kind of ugliness that amounts to a strange kind of beauty. It's found in tools that were designed purely for function without a thought for looks -- and that's why the new VW doesn't have it and neither did the Model 4 Sten; they were designed for looks. If Spyderco ever starts designing for looks their knives will lose that and be just plain ugly too.

We had a long thread some time ago trying to pick the ugliest knife. We could decide which model, but we decided it would be something from Rekat.

beauty, and ugliness lies in the eye of te beholder, excuse me blade holder, personally the only ugly knife is one that is threatening or my own that has just broken other wise to me all blades is beeeaaauuuutifuuuuuull.

you guys are right, there are no "ugly knives". there are just knives that are less pleasing to the eye than others. among my picks are

BM 750 Pinnacle
GT full size
The spyderco ulu they were contemplating awhile ago

but then again, i have the first two and they are an absolute joy to use. for knives, beauty is in using them.

Ugly: anything that exudes cheap workmanship
and inferior materials,eg. any Jaguar knife.
I don't believe you guys think the 750 is
ugly...I feel it's exceptionally appealing!
Wait a minute, I missed the point. BEST ugly
knife is the Jot Sing Khalsa.

Now I've seen beautiful knives, and not so beautiful knives, and knives that made me say, "what were they thinking?" (Frost Cutlery) but I can't actually say I've seen an ugly knife, maybe not my style, but hey different strokes for different folks. When I saw my first Spyderco my first impression was, "That's interesting!"

The Pocket Hobbit is atrocious, but the Hobbit Warrior isn't THAT bad looking, and the Gijan Warrior (a bigger Hobbit) is just plain COOL. The Toad is just stupid looking. That's the first thing I ever thought when I saw it; "These guys are claiming this D'alton guy to be brilliant, and he comes out with THIS???" was probably pretty close to the wording. Then there's the Spydercard, Tim Wegnerm and Bill Moran Feahtherweight. It seems that everyone agrees that many of Spyderco's knives are kinda funny looking. Most of them aren't though.
There's also the Emerson La Griffe, which wouldn't be bad if the blade wasn't so small. I also think the BM 730 is a monstrosity (though that's in comparison with the Elishevitz Ares). Then there's the BM Spike.
The Cold Steel Scimitar! YIKES! ICK!!!
Ka-Bar Warthog? hat one might just seem cool to many. Don't know. SOG Jetedge. The Gerber Paul knife.
I won't go into older styles (jack knife, etc.), because you can't really break that up by brand. On the other hand, I think all stockmen (stockmans?) are stupid looking.

I'd say the spyderco Q fits in there, again a quality knife designed for use not looks. Its a little smaller than I like though. Have to admit that the skeletonizd Q designed for the PRCA is pretty cool. Wish I could get that in an endura with a normal clip insted of the wire one.I'd ant a solid handle to. The cutout picture in the blade is the only thing I find appealing about it. I wouldn't use it daily but it would be a nice carry once in a while, or just a cool knife to have.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

Shivey is right. I've heard several good things, regarding performance, about the Jot Khalsa, but it truly is hideous.

Although I'm sure they are very well made with top notch materials........ Those damn Boker folders with those hideous, knurled, acorn shell looking thumbstud thingies are BUTT UGLY!

The rounded ball looking thing on the end of the handle doesn't exactly turn me on either

This is MY opinion and I don't mean to offend anyone with MY opinion! Sorry if I sounded hostile or anything.......If someone finds one of my knives UGLY go ahead an post it

I can't believe it, I love the Starmate, I think it is very appealing and also the BM Pinnacle. Now if you want UGLY look at the Pocket Hobbit, WOOOOW that thing was made from the ugly stick.

Sorry doubled up

Neil this new one of yours is pretty far from ugly IMO
