Dear Friends,
Having hung out with artists for many years, it is more than likely the folks who did this prank have no agenda and their pieces have no intended meaning whatsoever other than to be cool and outlandish and to get them noticed as artists. At best they are probably just wanting to mess with the status quo and shake things up. I guess that's not much unlike DDDs stated motive for posting them here, hmmmm.
As for whether it is art or not, who cares. For my book, its such cheap crap and juvenile sensationalism its hardly worth wasting breath on.
As for positive or negative impression re cutlery, that is of course in the eye of the beholder. One could easily see the images as showing how ludicrous and cheap and blown out of proportion and unrealistic and misplaced the whole knife-fear-thing is.
Lets face it though, part of the fascination of knifes is the very real dichotomy of their lethality and utilitarian functionality. This is an issue that is as old as the blood that pumps throughout the long and windy road of our ongoing heritage as human beings. It is as old, or older, than Cain and Abel. It is as much a part of our genetic collective memory as the rose, the serpent and the lily. As a species we are hardwired to not be passive when it comes to stuff like this!
Respectfully, Phil
