As with some other guys, I'm not concerned about the weight, my pants and belt fit me well so they stay up!

I doubt titanium would be as popular as it is if people really didn't care about weight. For me, the Spydie Millie is as big and as heavy a folder I can tolerate. And I usually don't carry it opting for a Delica or SAK.

I voted over 4 oz. I own a few large folders but the knives I actually carry are all the size of a mini Grip.

Honestly weigth is not as much of a factor to me until it starts to reach obsurd levels for the size of the knife. I like larger folders, generally limiting myself to 4" length for a blade, and my personal sweet spot is at 3.75" from what I've leanred over time, sometimes going as low as 3.5", and for that size range, anything that goes above 7oz is really not workth the weight for me.
I like folders to be built well and tough, but the whole "overbuilt" bull has gotten immensely old to me, and weight is one of the reasons why, especially in smaller folders. If anything with a blade under 3" exceeds 4.5oz, then the knife is likely not worth the weight as well, especially since I usually only carry a knife that small in conjunction with a larger knife as well.
I do like my EDC for work to be a little lighter since I wear kaki pants for work, but I also wear very heavy and drable kakis, so it's not like I have a lot to worry about with those honestly. I just prefer a slimmer knive for work so it doesn't stick out as much in the pocket and get uncomfortable while moving around or sitting.

But, for the right design and pupose, there are likely some exceptions to my limits on weight. If the knife is well-balanced and ergonimic also does play a good amount into whether or not I like it for the weight.

I think that there are really a lot of other reasons that people like Ti, but at the same time you are right.

Titanium just has so many good quailities in addition to being lightweight that people really can't pass it up when it's offered lately it seems.

Except on rare occasions I wear short light pants so anything over 4oz. is too heavy. I use heavier knives, but I just don't carry them.

All,

Not surprised here. Unless one is fully weighted down with everything one needs for a month or more, a few more ounces is just that. In my earlier years I was a competive marathon runner. my buddy and I joked about how much money it costs for a few ounces less for a running shoe. In fact when one could easily drop a few ounces of body weight. Same applies here IMO. Its quite interesting when watching u tube reviews there are so many comments on the weight of a knife mostly hinting that it's too heavy.

Anyway, thanks for participating..... I fall with the masses I suppose, a bit heavier is a good thing. :D

I don't like heavy folders at all. Cryo II Ti was to heavy for me. Sold it off. I like small, light folders for daily tasks. I like fixed blades when I need a bigger knife.

It's not weight that bothers me, it's width...

Wide knives don't work well when you're trying to fish something out of your pocket, and they feel awkward when sitting down.

Lightweight is a plus though, especially if I'm pocket carrying something like a slip joint.

My pants go clank, clunk or thud when they hit the ground. Weight limit? I don't need no stinking weight limit!

Good idea for a thread. I prefer under 4, but I would choose that over 5 ounces would be too much for me.

Yep, the one thing about my new SNG that I can't get used to is the amount of pocket space it takes up.

Wait are you talking about width or thickness?

If it's got a clip, I'll carry it. Most of my folders are between 4 and 7 ounces, though. I guess I'd draw the line at some manner of folding machete...

Mostly carry ZT0200, which is about 8 oz. I change to something else, like when traveling and downsizing to local regs with a Leek, and it feels like a toy. I wouldn't mind something a bit thinner and maybe 3.75", but seems to be a rare segment. Lots of little 3.25" ones to pick from lately, but they don't fit with me as a generic carry knife. I'm used to the big one afterall. For some special purposes the little ones are OK with me tho. The ZT0452 might work for me, but I'd wish for a special run in the steel.

Width, like as in Manix vs Sebenza, I don't know how people carry those Medford things:D

Hey guys and Gals,

Here is one to have some fun with. I am curious for those of you that have an good idea of weight, or actually weigh your knives. At what point does a EDC, Folders here only Please, Excluding: How Broad, Thick, and Long is become too heavy for you to carry. I would Guess the majority of us would prefer a lighter knife, this said I really don't mind and sometimes prefer a knife with some attitude behind it as long as it is not pulling my pants down. What cha think? TD

Hello,

The poll is closed now so I can't vote.

The Buck 110 that I carry on a daily basis is 7.2 ounces. I do not have a problem with that and I usually carry it in a fanny pack.

I do not carry a lot of stuff in a fanny pack and/or in a purse to weigh it down anyway.

I think that the size of a knife would be more of an issue for me not that I would want anything super, super HEAVY in a knife to carry the way that I carry a knife. I carry a knife in a pocket sometimes but usually in a leather fanny pack.

The Buck skinner fixed blade knife that I like very much and carry is lighter than the Buck 110. It comes in at 5.2 ounces.

Take care.

Cate

A folder should weigh under 1oz. I only buy folders that are completely steletonized and made of titanium or carbon fiber. Even the Spyderco Q is too heavy for me

It really depends on what I am wearing.

As previously mentioned jeans or heavy-duty work pants and a sturdy belt facilitate the carry of serious knives. I do not favor pocket bricks whose size, girth and weight combined add up to more than I can tolerate - but serious folders.

If I am in lightweight dress pants then I typically tone-down my size and weight of chosen knife for that day. I will carry smaller and lighter knives when in lightweight dress pants. Lightweight shorts, bathing suits or board shorts (I am in The Keys a lot) typically get a Spyderco, for weight considerations and, of late either a Pacific Salt PE or SE (sometimes both) take the place of my "regular" folders.

Because everyone's definitions can be different, my norm would be in the Emerson, Large Sebenza, Thermite, RAT-1 category. I am aware that some around here may see these as pip-squeaks while other view them as over-sized monsters.

The above is all in the context of EDC folder duty. My clear preference is for a fixed blade (backpack or belt) when afield.

I'm concerned with some of you guys that have a weight limit for a pocket knife. What exactly is the issue between 4 oz and 6 oz? Is it the wear on your pockets or is it a physical strength issue? Am I just not relating because I'm a big strong man that wears bdu pants to work?
