here is a video i had a coworker shoot of me quenching this large chunk of 17-4. it was 3.5" by 20" round stock and @ 1925 deg, great fun :D. i though you would like to see. I littlery have thousands of pounds of this stuff i have to re heat treat because it was ordered for another job but it it was not made in the US so we could not use it and the suppler would not take it back. so we are stuck with like 2500 pound or more of this stuff. but we have another job that can use it but it has to be heat threated to H900 not H1150 which it is currently. 17-4PH is weird in that to harden it you just take it up to 900 deg and let it sit for an hr and bam you get any where between 42-47 HRC. but to be able to re harden it you have to take it up to 1925 and let it sit for a half hr or so and then quench it. this resets the hardness back to like 32 and then you can go up from there by age hardening it at different temps. its actually quite cool material. but that just means i have a lot of fun in front of the nice oven :D

1 - you need a bigger quench tank
2 - you need a bigger furnace
3 - you need a different hobby

So how much does that one piece weigh? And how many of them are there in you 2500 pounds of the stuff?

Looks HOT!!! How many can you do in a session? Kind of looks like the quench will get too hot with just one?

well i can do an oven full which is about 5 or a bit more. the water will boil but thats OK because this steel does not need a real fast quench at all. then when it gets to the temp of the water i take it out side and let it cool down to less then 60 deg as thats important. I really don't know how many chunks that is but i know we have to pallets full of this bar stock and i have to cut each bar into thirds so it can fit into the oven. by my math each bar should weigh around 50 pounds, maybe its 3 inch stock and not 3.5. i don't know, all i do know is that its heavy and hot :D

Is that quenchant plain water? No eye/face protection? Dang, JT I'm scared o' you!:D
