...Which would be the best for a multipurpose bushcrafty knife? I'm thinking ease of carving (small things), batoning, drilling divots for bow drills, and pretty much every other camping chore that gets done.

Think of it as if you could only take one of the three; which one would you take with you to do everything you need?

I'm really trying to decide which knife to get next for this summer, and I do plan on getting each of them just not all at the same time.

I know there is a lot of love for the BK2 but I'm not asking about the 2.

Thanks guys.

I don't have the 5 but I have the 7&9 .Im starting to like the 7 alot so i say the 7.

I only have the 2, but I'd say the 7 will get the chopping done faster. The BK2 is great, but it's thickness makes for food prep more difficult.
I would take something like the 7, if it were my only knife.

I have all of them, and I have tested all of those for what you are asking. I would say the 7 hands down. Most versitile tool in the BKT lineup, can pretty much do anything in the woods that needs to be done.

I been playing with my new one alot lately, and I'm fast falling in love all over again. For the longest time, my 7's didn't get used much, because of that "tactical, military" look that it has. The sleek point, and combat look, just kinda left me thinking the 2 was more bushy than the 7's crafty. Now, I'm making bowdrills, shelters, and teaching my kids some about woodland skills with it, and I'm thinking of taking it to a survival class here in a couple of weeks, that I'm going to. Very, very, very mulitpurpose knife.

The nine can do an amazing number of things around camp. A lot more than you would think just looking at it. The nine and a little bushcrafter would cover anything. If I could only take one however, it would be the seven. By the way, if you are a convex fan and have access to a belt grinder, the seven with a good convex edge is the baddest mofo on the planet.

I recently got started in Beckers with the 5. I haven't had it out yet, but I'm guessing it's more blade length than I need. I got it after much waffling back and forth between the blades you mention. I chose it because I am more interested in food prep than batoning. Considering your interest in batoning, your lack of mention of food prep, and your desire to have something that can handle smaller-scale carving tasks, I would recommend the 7.

Does the 7 differ much from the 77Extreme? I've got the shiny new one, but not the original 7.

The 7 has a whole lot going for it in that jack-of-all trades vein, but I say you should fly your freak flag and get a 5. :D

OP, other than materials, the basic design is identical. I'm not 100% sure about thickness though.
Have a look at the Blade Database (stickied), and Bladite's careful chronicling will answer all.

Just the metal and the handle, overall dimensions are the same in every way. Maybe a little thicker, I don't have access to a caliper at the moment, but just by feel, even the weight is the same.

I had lunch with Ethan today, and we were talking about the 77, we want to get out and use them, but they are just so damn pretty. I have 2 salt water adventures coming in the near future, that my 77 will be my choice in blades to take, so, at least I know that it will see some action then.

ATTA BOY! I use my 7 the most outta the choices listed. The 9 im thinking is about to take over. If i need small fine carving blade, well, a 13 rides in the sheath as well :)

The BK-9 is a great chopper, it's a chopping machine. I have chopped through 7 and eight in logs in 5 and 6 minutes with it. The BK-7 is still a decent chopper, I have done a LOT of chopping with mine, but it's smaller and handier to carry than the BK-9 plus the 7 has a nice pointy tip which is an important factor for me, not only for it's defensive capabilities but more importantly for bushcraft and survival applications. I like being able to bore small holes at need for things like water filters, bamboo containers for collecting insects to use for fish bait...or to eat, or for making line tensioners and what have you. Of the two I would definitely pic the 7 for all around use. That said I also like the BK-2 very much. It is shorter, and a good bit easier to carry discretely if needed but thicker and tough as hell. Plus with the high grind it slices really well for such a thick knife and chops amazingly well for a knife with a 5 inch blade.

Thank you, gents. Seems the 7 and 77Extreme are really, geometrically, the same.

But ... I need to get a 5, so I can make appropriate comparisons.

Thanks!

Not a whole heckuva lot more to add than what's already been said. I've got nothin' but love for the BK7! I'd recommend it time and time again. It won't let you down!

I would be willing to loan you my BK 7 & BK 9 for some T & E.

I'm gonna go with Testing and Evaluating, but when you use google for acronyms, you have to have some idea of what you were looking for to begin with.:D

Which I did not.

Seems like the consensus is the 7 as being the best choice.

I would be willing to loan you my BK 7 & BK 9 for some T & E.

That would be great. It would be awesome to be able to handle both of those before I choose which one to buy. I'll e-mail you.
