I didn't want to make a leather sheath for the BK7, its just too big IMO. But, the sheath that came with it is unacceptably dangerous. So I did my first kydex sheath for it. Also, since I detest the plastic handles, I put on the mikarta ones. Whaddya think?

Oh, very nice! The Micarta MUST feel better, and just raises the quality-look factor 10x.

I just got a Brute, will those Micarta scales fit the BK1 same/same?
Are they from Camillus? (or, where did you get them?)

Also, where did you get the Kydex? I would like to try it for another project.

Lookin good.

THe handles and sheath look great! I've got to get some of the micarta handles and try them on a few of my Beckers. I've heard great things about them, but haven't felt the need to try them yet. I suppose I should order some while I still can.

Questions about your sheath: Did you use a press? If so, a commercially available press, or did you make your own? What thickness Kydex did you use?

 Why not leather? Too big???? I dont understand.:o

I'd like to know about the micarta as well, I've got a Machaxe that screams for such handles!

Seriously, what is so big about the BK7 that is too big for leather???

imho its cheap but not dangerous-but its a 50$ knife,so how good could it be
i bought a bk10 just because it was a little smaller than the bk7

just got the micarta handles-sweet

have some corian that i might try-for shoots and giggles

I think some folks have had a problem with the Kydex (or is it plastic?) liner pulling out of the nylon sheath when you draw the knife out. I picked up a BK7 tonight at a local store, and my sheath appears to be copacetic. A few odd marks on the knife itself however...

Oh yea, the BK7 is pretty nice! What a deal, too! Probably one of the best bang-for-your-buck knives around. Noticeably lighter than my TacTool, but still has a decent amount of heft to it.

leatherman, I think aproy1101 thought that a decent leather sheath, although very nice, would be quite large and bulky. Or at least it would have been larger and bulkier than Kydex. Perhaps aproy1101 just wanted something low profile. Or perhaps aproy was afraid a leather sheath would look like a cowboy shooting rig. Now that I think about it, that's a little bit what the pouch-type sheaths I've seen for the BK10s remind me of. Hmmm... They are still nice sheaths though.

This is a minor problem. I've had the kydex liner come out of some more costly sheaths. All I did was to put some strong glue on it and insert it back in. This is what I like about these. THe liner can be taken out and molded to the knife for a better fit.

Goody. Suddenly a lot of action over here. Firstly, I make and sell sheaths. The leather sheath for anything bigger than a BK10 is bulky (heavy AND thick), and uses a LOT of leather. I made a few khuk sheaths out of leather, and would up using most of a single shoulder. Jeez it was heavy and thick too. Kydex for large knives is just a personal choice. I do love the look of leather though. Here is a pic of the leather sheath I did for my BK10

The original sheath is dangerous, IMO, because when reinserting the knife, if the blade accidentally slips behind the kydex insert then all thats seperating it from YOU is the canvas. NOT acceptable to me. The sheath should protect the knife, and protect ME from the knife. Just a personal preference here too. I think the kydex liner pulling out is annoying, but not dangerous. Its during reinsertion that I think there is danger. I didn't expect more, and was very happy with both my Beckers overall.

I got the mikarta scales directly from Camillus by calling them. The kydex I got from Texas Knifemaker Supply. I chose them over Knifekits because they sell the hammer and anvil rivet setter (6 dollars) and KK only sells the arbor press rivet setter. My kydex press is a piece of cardboard with foam glued to it that was sent as packing material to my work.

Thank you for the info Andy! I think I'll look to TKS for the rivet setter and other hardware, and I'll try making a kydex sheath for my BK7. Although my BK7 factoy sheath seems to be decently put together, I would prefer a kydex sheath. Thanks for the inspiration!

And your BK10 set looks nice!

Leatherman. Wow. I checked your site... you are a master. Beautiful stuff.

Hikeeba, thanks. This project shouldn't be above anyones skill level. Lemme know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the feedback on the sheath. I suppose I never considered "missing" the kydex liner, but then I don't wear mine on my belt.

I did order a couple of sets of the micarta grips just now.

I have a BK7 and a Necker ... which should I get (before it's too late) for the second set of grips (the BK7 obviously gets the first)?

I have to ask. I have a BK1 brute and love it but would like to know if anyone makes micarta handles for it?

Anyone know.

KR

Rhino, I'm with you, called today, Micarta's are on the way for my Bk1.

I spoke with Wendy for a moment about their labor issues.
Wendy said they have "replacement workers" in place, they are in production mode, a little bit slower, but they are still cranking out knives and filling orders.

I will be holding a candlelight vigil on the front porch, awaiting the Micarta's arrival.

I'll need for some of you guys to stop and hand me a beer and bag of chips every few hours. ...and a fan , it's hot out here! :D
