The BK7 Challenge (or...why can't I love my BK7?)

Hey, yellowswiss, sorry to hear you don't get allong with your 7...
I think you Might as well send it to me for disposal, haha...
I promise I'm willing to provide the poor thing with a loving home.....

If I were limited to a 7” blade I’d want the bk7 over the stick tang combat/utility knives. If not limited, the bk9 or even the bk20/29.

I wish i had the money to buy one, they are like £109-149 in the UK, my budgets £60, So it`s Schrade city for me :(

I've come to the conclusion that certain models will outshine others on different chores but as long as I have at least one Becker along with me I'am a happy camper :D long live the 7 and the rest of the Becker line  except the 23 :p

As stated by The Man himself, the BK-7 was designed as a combat knife. Many "combat knives" are seven inches for a variety of reasons one, believe it or not, is the ability to pierce a man's heart if entry is from the superior trapezius region. Longer than that can become unwieldy during everyday field activities and, as E. so correctly pointed out, ounces matter for a man expected to carry everything he needs for combat, along with his share of unit gear, on his person - all the while maintaining mobility.

The Nine is a chopper (for sure!) and who among us does not appreciate the handiness and control provided by the Sweet-16 (or any of the Tweeners) but every knife cannot be every thing to ever one. A soldier has to pry open pallets, open MREs, dispatch a critter - or a person. I think an infantryman would be well served by a BK-7 and a quality multi-tool with the latter getting the majority of use.

We here are different. We chop, baton and feel the need to carve from wood things that are readily available in the commerce stream. If, God forbid, I have to use something to end a man's life trying to take my life or someone near enough for me to help, the implement I would likely use would not say Becker - it would say Glock, or Colt or ... you get the idea.

The BK-7 is the F-150 of the Becker line-up. It won't chop like the 4, 9, 21 or 29 - just like the F-150 won't tow large boats and trailers like the 3500+ series diesels will. Likewise, the BK-7 is cumbersome in the delicate bush-crafty things many like to do in their spare time - just like the F-150 cannot handle like a Porsche or a Lotus. The BK-7, like the f-150, is a compromise of design for a very specific use profile. For that reason it doesn't get the love I believe it deserves.

It's oftentimes not the first Becker I grab - but it is not and will not be up for sale anytime soon.

True words Salty! As a former Jarhead I figured the BK7 would be perfect...after all, my Kabar served me well. But when I got the 7 (my first Becker) I shortly bought a BK9 and the rest was history. I just wish it was the "all arounder" I expected it to be. Oh well...different strokes...

The last Christmas or Thanksgiving sale at Kabar.com Bk9’s were selling for less than your current budget!!
In fact you can buy several of schrade’s comparable(in size, not performance) knives for your budget today here in the states.

Same evaluation of the 7 here. I had a hard time bonding with the first one that passed through my hands (the now-mythical Frankenbecker), but when I picked up one at a Gathering, I decided to give it the de-ramp (Wayne) and choil treatment. I do like it a lot, but doesn't fit with my needs. Hell, mostly what I need are kitchen knives! Happy to have one now, though. It's a good One-Knife Knife, though the BK-10 is my TEOTWAWKI blade.

What's not to like about the 7?
Just get out there and use the thing like you stole it.

Those are some very nice curly Q's. :) This summer has been a huge suck factor for us here in Ca. Way to many out of control fires :(
