Here are some pictures from the blackforest I shot between christmas and new year. We have a house there (inherited from my grandpa) and I try to visit the blackforest as often as I can. It's a little paradise for hikers, mountainbikers and friends of good air and good food.

I found this kind of beautiful:

Found something?

You can see the Feldberg (1493m) in the background. It's the highest mountain of the blackforest.

This picture was taken close to the top of it:

Found these wooden figures quite funny:

We had a great time there!

@Ottoshot:
If you take a close look at the fourth picture, you'll be able to see the one at the bottom:

It's a Böker Carbon Steel Hunter.

Thank's for the hint about the knifetype:) It took me some time to find it!

I like the wooden figures you can find in the forests in Germany and Austria very funny.
You can find wooden birds, dwarfs, persons,deers,... on places you would never expect them.
Do you know who makes them? Is it some kind of tradition for bushcrafters(Waldarbeiter) or something?

@Ottoshot: No worries! Glad you like the pics!

@buckabee:
I'm not sure. I guess it's just a hobby of some older men. I found similar figures in Switzerland (around Davos), too. Squirrels, giant mushrooms and other funny stuff. I thought about making one myself one day. :D

Sorry, I have no pictures of the food, but about a place where it can be found. :D
Raimartihof, the highest (in altitude) restaurant of Germany, also one of the oldest (300years). Very traditional food at incredebly low prices (seriously, I was astonished!).

What is behind the name "Black Forest?" Looking at the pictures, my guess would be the closeness of the trees makes it look foreboding, but it would be nice to hear a Germanic explanation of the origins.

And is the so-called "Black Forest Cake" really a local dessert, or is that something like the totally American "chop suey" is to Chinese cuisine?

I think the name blackforest comes from the pine trees. Those trees have all been planted, they didn't grow naturally. Hundreds of years ago people in this region started to sell huge amounts of wood for building ships for example (ask the dutch!). We have our house in a former lumberjack camp, they chopped down and planted trees for a town that was famous for making glass. From a window in our house the forest looks like an endless dark ocean made of pinetrees. I should have made a picture of that. Maybe next time.
Yes the blackforest cherry cake is a local dessert, as well as "cherrywater" (cherry liquor). But there is a lot more to find than these two things. ;)
I love the market in Freiburg, you'll find all kinds of meat, sausages, fresh trouts or liquor from local farms (mostly made from fruits like pears).

@Moodino: I only know Affentaler, it has a monkey on the bottle. :D

Edit: With "those trees have all been planted" I didn't mean that there was no forest before. There were just other trees and not only this one kind of tree.

Its really beautiful,any chance of some pictures of your home?How about some Black Forest ham?How much snow do you get there?

Here is a picture of the house. It's the only one I have right now. I'll make more pictures next month.

Sorry, no ham pictures available atm. But that can be arranged, too. :D

Edit: About the snow. It depends. Sometimes >1m, sometimes just 30cm maximum. At the top of the feldberg they have snow cannons, so you can go skiing almost every winter.

Beautiful pictures, it brings back some good memories. I really miss the forests outside of Bonn where I spent much of my time while I was in Germany. I was amazed at finding all the trails there, and a place in the middle of nowhere to buy some frittes and bier.

I also miss the Früh Kölsch :thumbup:

A beautiful forest, The Black forest. My Regensberg mom took me there in 1981. It is a great memory. Thanks for the great pics!
