Are we so far removed from the hazards of reality that we cringe over a little wound and some blood? I listened to him while he worked and most comments here don't fit with my take on the video. He wasn't using blood in place of water/oil, he didn't cut himself, he has done this many times before with no ill effect and it's not much blood in the water slurry mix.
Go watch some surgery videos on the Tube and man up blade forums. A nosebleed must be a medical emergency in some households.
Removed from hazards of reality, nope. But I still find the idea of sharpening a knife with blood on the stone both disgusting and very unsanitary. I refused to watch the video and just clicked the link to the thread in hopes I was wrong, the picture of the youtube video is enough to get the general idea. And no I am scared of blood, I just try to avoid it and other people's bodily fluids. It was kind of beaten into us when I was getting my medical training.
From what I gathered here from the comments it sounds like he worn his fingers down till they bled if I am not mistaken. If so he needs to rethink how he sharpens if that is what is going on and find better finger placement.
And funny you should mention a nosebleed as an medical emergency. One of my teachers had a patient who died of a severe nosebleed, and yes the person sought medical attention in a timely manner and it wasn't caused by a fight or any trauma of that nature, it was just a nosebleed a very severe nosebleed. That was one of those interesting stories they told us of their past calls to make sure we bring our "A" game to every call and not take things for granted just because it's a nosebleed.
