Hey again! What is so special about the bowie knife? I mean I love em and have a custom bowie that was given to me when my great grandfather died. Besides the striking beauty, what are their strong points in functionality? Thanks!

The Bowie clip should bring the point to the center line of the blade, thus allowing a dagger like thrust capability in a single edged knife.

On single edge knives, the spine of the blade will be at the back. The spine of a dagger will be in the center line. It is difficult to get a good sharp edge on a dagger blade as such blades are too thick at the edge, one can get a very good cutting edge on a single blade knife as the the blade will taper down to a fine edge.

A bowie knife should be large, with some weight for chopping power. Remember that a Bowie knife was a sidearm in the early to mid 19th century when muzzle loading firearms were the norm.

So a Bowie knife should be able to chop like a cleaver, cut like a razer, and pierce like a dagger. It's purely a weapon and was used as such before revolvers were commonly available.

And that's about where the big ones usefulness ends since so many other designs will do so many of the jobs better.

That's the key, the knife as a sidearm was pretty important in a day when people took their firearms to a gunsmith to be loaded so there would be some reasonable chance that the thing would fire.

Here is an old thread that comes up now and then (last few days) with a lot of Bowie Knife discussion.

Personally I love bowies, and the bigger the better for me. I wouldn't limit the usefullness of a bowie by calling it a fighting knife only. I find them to be wonderfully usefull and versital in hiking, camping, survival situations.

No knife is perfect for every thing, but a good bowie is capable of quite a lot.

We've all decided that there's a better-than-average chance that you're a dweeb who was around here a while ago who went by the name of Superflyafro. Care to comment on that?
