For Christmas I got two exact knives, I was thinking about ditch one for a different style same brand ( sell the extra tanto and buy a drop tip)
how important is the factory box ?
I have the box so I guess I can say NIB when I list it

Sell a knife???? Why would anyone ever do such a thing??

My thoughts exactly.

I don’t have room to save all the boxes, even if I did eventually they’d get water damaged, dirty, crushed, ripped, stepped on, moldy or some other damage. Might as well toss them now, than save them and toss them in ten years.

Plus I buy my knives to use, once you use them they aren’t NIB anyway. Used In Box doesn’t have the same apeal as New In Box.

I buy Striders as I can get in in the drops and they only come in a plastic bag. That’s fine with me, the packaging of a knife isn’t something I really care about. Now if I am buying one on the second dart it is nice to get it as it would come from the factory with all packaging but it’s not a deal breaker. However I’d expect a discount.

Most of my fave fixed makers don't bother with cardboard.
I'll dishonourably mention Shirogorov for their cheapo, cramped packaging.
I do like over the top packaging like MKT and the nice wooden boxes of Hoback.

I keep boxes only for the resell value of knives I mothball.

as Dragon_Man Dragon_Man said, if the knife is gonna be a user, I throw the paper.

For a new production knife that anybody can buy in a store, I don't think the box adds anything. For a limited production knife it is probably worth it to keep the box if the knife is used and definitely worth it if the knife is new.
I say worth it, maybe it adds $5 or $10 on the average. If you have to make room for the boxes, keep up with them even when you move, etc., it might not be worth your time for a potential but not guaranteed small increase in selling price for the knife.
When I buy a knife I but it to use so I don't care about the box. When I get a box I do keep up with it but sometimes wish I didn't have to.

It's a little bit more of a challenge with GECs tubes and other rigid boxes but having learned my lesson long ago with some of the wife's collectable's 'sometimes the box is more valuable than the object'. So I flatten the Case boxes and store them with the tubes and rigid boxes in a tub in our storage unit. The wife knows where they are kept so that if she decides to sell when I'm gone she can get top dollar.

I keep the boxes for the expensive stuff. Not to resell, I keep my stuff. But more for the fun factor of looking at them here and there.

I love my Hogue Ritter but I am a bit annoyed that they put it in the zipper case. This is a knife to be used. Dont waste my money on a fluffy plush case for a knife that has residue of my breakfast and a bag of chicken feed on it.

The only reason I value boxes is because the person I eventually sell to values boxes. Complete kits only for me for that reason.

The old CRK has the cheapest boxes and I tossed them and still able to sell the knife. but I keep the tubes from GEC knives just because they are cool and don't take up much space. Recently got a Heretic and a Demko and those are some sweet boxes worth keeping.

If you gonna make a cheap box (like Spyderco, older model Chris Reeve, Benchmade and Emerson) they gonna get tossed. There are companies that actually put some effort into the box design and add some cool features like a padded case and oil ,, it is worth keeping. But just a box, nah!
