Well, I just got home from seeing The Brave One, and to be honest, I am stunned by it!
There is NOT one single anti-gun comment in the whole movie.
Not even from Terrance Howards Police Detective character.
Of course his character speaks against vigilantism, but there are none of the typical Hollywood "citizen's shouldn't own guns", or "people aren't competent enough to protect themselves" stuff.
I have grown so tired of seeing gun shop owners portrayed as greasy dirtbag types, that make an illegal sale, that I always assume that's how they will be played on screen, but even that was OK, the guy was clean cut and nice, explained to her that he couldn't sell her a gun without a permit and so she resorted to buying one illegally herself. (but even then, she makes a statement about "I need to learn to properly use it", which I actually thought was OK.) NOTE:At this point she was just buying it for personal protection, her vigilantism doesn't start until she is forced to shoot someone and then starts "looking" for bad guys.
At no time in the film are the guns portrayed as being good or bad, they are not even really mentioned other than when the police start noticing 9mm casings at unrelated shootings and start matching them up.
Don't write this one off, it's not perfect, but it truly was not an anti-gun rant that we all have grown tired of.
PS:Little ol' Jodie Foster is actually WAY better in this role that Kevin Bacon was in Death Sentence, and for real Charles Bronson fans, there is a Subway scene that is a real nod to the original Death Wish!
