OK everyone, I already checked/used the search function to look for something like this but nothing came up.

Ok, today at lunch I was talking to a friend of mine about "stuff". We got talking about knives, guns, and the military. It turns out he also loves knives and guns too, my kind conversation :D . It turns out that his father is an ex-SAS. Now, I was a skeptic at first but you have to understand, this guy (he's 15, same as me) knows quite a bit about everything related to the SAS. He has an extensive knowledge of knife fighting, hand-to-hand combat, firearms, explosives, and military tactics. He also is knowledgeable in the area of operations that his father was part of. He claims his father has gone on numerous missions ranging from HAHO jumping over Laos (to eliminate a drug and arms dealer), to Iraq during Desert Sheild and later Desert Storm. He was also charged with misions that I am told are witten off as "I never heard of that before" kind of missions.

How this related to Busse Combat:

He says he still has the knife he was issued "back in the day". This is probably somewhere bewteen 1960-1985.

This is how he described the blade:

--About 8-9 inch blade
--Black coating and handle
--Balenced like a fighter

I thought this sounded a lot like a Desert Storm Fighter. Plus, the time frame seems right to me. Now the problem is, the blade is not like a standard DSF as the blade curves up in the last 2 inches of blade to the point (pun not intended) where the blade begins to take on the appearance of a schimitar. The thing that really got me interested was when he said, "It also has this hole in the metal beside the handle slabs." I understood this to mean either a choil or the Busse talon hole...

What do you think this is? I may be going over to his place later this week and I can report back. One other thing, he says this knife is rare.

I think 1960 - 1985 is too early for it to be a Busse knife.

just trying to stay on top of things around here, thatporkerguy made me a temp mod while he is gone for the next month

Scott, I know what a Desert Storm Fighter looks like but is their a variant that has an upward curve on the blade, i.e. schimitar?

Could it be a special knife designed and manufactured by Busse for the SAS? Sorry but I am not sure when he got it.

not that i have seen, i forgot what a d storm looked like so i had to dig mine out to see :)

Peter La , you will have to post a picture if you want a positive answer.

I realize that, but I am not able to take a picture as of yet. I will get working on it though.

I'm not part of the SAS, and I don't play one on TV, but I have been in the military for a long enough time to know how militaries work, and a few of the real-deal HS/LD types. That being said, let me be the first to wave the BS flag on this.

1. There is no 15 yr old that has "extensive knowledge of knife fighting, hand-to-hand combat, firearms, explosives, and military tactics". I don't care who you are, or who your dad is.

2. Also, I'd *seriously* doubt that he knows jack shizzle of what his dad has done (if indeed he is/was SAS). There's a contract we in the military with security clearances have to sign - I do recall mine stated that I can't speak of *anything* I've seen that could be considered "sensitive" or above for 50 years or until given permission by the Govt.

Your mileage may vary, but I've got the BS flag raised & it's waving in the breeze (right below my US Flag).

In the US it is easy. Just say "show me your DD-214."

Contrary to popular belief, it does say what type of job you had, up and including military intelligence.

There are also bloggers out there that can do some seriou digging and discover whether or not they were attached to those types of units.

Specific operations in certain areas may be one thing, but most units you served with, and areas you served in, can be found.

I love those people that "can't talk about that," and then 15 minutes later they are telling you all about it.

It is disrespectful of the people that wear the scars.

Ditto what Terry said.

Also, in the world of Special Operations - wether its US, Canadian, British, Aussie, German, French, Polish, {insert country here}, you're talking about a *very* tight group of individuals. In other words, for the most part, these guys know darn near everyone in the community, and if they don't know them, one of their buddies (in the same community) does.

There have been numerous people who've claimed to be what they're not, and have been called on it: some in a very public and humiliating way.

There are various websites out there dedicated specifically to "calling out" folks who've claimed to be what they're not.

Good thing you asked this question here and not some of the other places that I spend some of my time. Those boards can be a bit...uh...harsh (and rightfully so) to those who claim to be what they're not.

Understand Peter, I'm not talking down to you bro. Just letting you know to take everything you hear with a grain of salt. I can't tell you the number of times I've had people tell me they're Ranger/SEALs/Delta/Alpha/Omega/PJ/Megaforce/SAS/Special Forces/Recon/ScoutSniper/SP's.

The world is full of people who are full of hot air. Don't believe 99.999% of what you hear.

Hell bro, to prove the point, I'm willing to bet we've got ourselves a couple of certified BT/DT's who post on this here board - but you'll never know about it.

If any of you guys are reading this: Thanks guys!

Perhaps I should not have used the word "extensive". His knowledge quite acute and well, you would have to talk to the guy to understand. That Al Mar knife looks to be about right. If I can get a chance to take a picture or see the thing in person then I will be able to comment on it.

I may be able to talk to him more in the next couple of weeks.

Most Spec/Ops guys don't even talk to their wives and GF's about their missions, especially the dark one's. Not alone because they don't because everything about their job is on a "need to know basis", but also because they don't wan't to get her scared 24/7. I have a hard time believing that a father would talk with his 15 year old son about his missions. It is entirely possible that his father is in the SAS, but i guess dad doesn't talk about it much by the fireplace. Most operatives wan't to be left alone when they come home after a mission, and the wives /GF know not to ask where they have been or what they have done. Remember that these guys must endure extreme psychological and physical pressure and the last thing they do is brag about it in the local pub. They will discuss it, but only in the cantine INSIDE Stirling Lines. Remember that most SAS operatives have had or doing active duty in Northern Ireland and that they won't like it when their 15 year old son discusses his actions IN A PUB !

The walls have ears, and informants from the IRA and INLA have been known to frequent the local pubs around Hereford just with the intention to gather info about the whereabouts and family situations of active and past SAS-members.

Even if he is genuine it would be wiser for his own and his family safety to keep his mouth shut!
