The Busse Basic #9 -vs- The Cold Steel Trail Master!

Great writeup Mike - I'm calling in my order for a subscription ASAP.

I guess there is something that always puzzeled me about the Trailmaster. Cold steel did produce a limited run of this knife with a micarta handle during the early 90s (the "Flight of the Intruder" version). Unfortunately, the knife blade was in stainless (440C)and blued

. I can't understand why its so difficult to get them to offer this handle on their regular model?

If Cold Steel replaces the sheath (Kydex) and handle (micarta) it would pretty much be a toss up between these two otherwise excellent knives. Then again, it would be yet another version to add to my collection.

The handle of the TM is it's biggest weakness. I had one... traded it for a BJ Stalker.... due to the blisters and soreness of trying to grip that skinny and tacky Kraton, I have come to the conclusion that I would rather chop with a brick.... Give a TM a better handle and it would be twice the knife IMHO

Well maybe Lynn Thompson will read this and come out with a different version.

I will admit that with a different handle I would of had a different impression overall. Whether or not it would beat the Busse with a different handle is a different story.

Great review Mike! Thanks for the information. I read the comparison test, subscribed, and read the rest of the mag. Well done.
I agree about the handle of the TM. It's ok for a little kindling, but major chopping calls for a hatchet. .... Do I hear a Busse calling my name? Stand by Jerry, got an order coming.

Thank you Mike,
Chris

Coyote :

tests to failure while extremely interesting are probably more academic than useful

Even if you are not into the heavier blade uses such as prying, heavy strength and durability evaluations are important as they are directly correlated to the main ability of a blade which is its cutting ability.

High strength and durability allow for high performance cutting geometry and raise edge holding ability. They also protect the edge from damage from accidental impacts and of course any high stress work.
