THE BUSSE CHAT THREAD!

That's a legit site, didn't know about that. Anybody recollect a blade thickness on a Heavy Heart Fusion Steel Heart and then Heavy Ordinance Fusion Steel Heart?
I couldn't find a confirmed thickness.
Also, I've heard the term "A-symmetrical grind" not familiar with that one.

Edge bevel is different on each side.

And they do that on purpose? Interesting.
I've come across a few "friday afternoon" knives that were uneven from side to side over the years and I've spent hours on my KME grinding them even. Production knives mind you, So I know they weren't doing it on purpose.

Asymmetrical Grind Info

grind_asym.jpg

Description
An asymmetrical grind could be used to describe any grind that is not the same on both sides of the knife like a chisel grind, but generally speaking it usually used to describe the unique secondary bevel that Busse Combat uses on their knives. Note that Busse knives usually have flat grinds and the asymmetrical grind refers only to the secondary bevel.

The picture on the left is blown up a bit more than the other grind pictures to show the secondary grind better. As you can see the secondary bevel is flat on one side, and convex on the other. Busse claims that this grind is tougher than a standard V-grind, and how it is easier to sharpen as well, which is true in many ways.

The asymmetrical grind allows you to just home the one flat side, and remove the burr from the other. This makes sharpening faster, and and leaves an edge less prone to chipping due to the increased toughness. However, an asymmetrical ground secondary bevel is not as sharp as a V-grind and is designed more for toughness.

I have a skeleton key with a very uneven grind. It’s definitely asymmetrical,Not sure if it’s intentional.
Im looking for a thinner version I don’t think those have the same grind. Idk

Excellent reading.

Busse asym edge on a satin blade—

Convex edge on right side:

Minimal (almost micro) flat edge bevel on left:

On coated Busse blades the flat-side bevel is often somewhat more prominent than in this pic. The convex-side bevel is wider on some asym models than on others, also.

All Grayman fixed-blades are asymmetrical. Yes, there are brands of fixed-blade knives other than Busse. They’re just not as special.

Folders? I have Chris Reeve; Hinderer; Shirogorov; Medford; Three Sisters, and others. Are many of us, I ask, somewhat near addicted to cutting instruments? And not inexpensive models.

Oh yeah, I'm cheating on Becker Knife and tool with Busse & Kin.
I've always carried and used utility grade type folders, Spyderco or benchmade mostly. I just can't get excited over folding knives for some reason.

After the first date with Busse Kin, I wouldn’t even go home to say goodbye to Becker Knife and tool.

Hey FAL'ER, the battery in my calipers is dead, but per my tape the HHFSH is 1/4" and the HOFSH is 5/16”. Per the Busse Collector site, they are 0.27 and 0.32. It's a good site and while it does have some holes in it, it does have a lot of information. Here's a pic of the two side by side, but since the HHFSH has magnum scales and the HOFSH has regular thickness scales and a cord wrap it may not look true to scale. Also, I've stripped the HOFSH but you can still get a pretty good idea.

Some good info from some other HOGs on different grinds, from what I recall Jerry liked the asymetrical grinds because they were easier to sharpen in the field. Most, if not all of the ergo line was only offered with the asymetrical grind. The SHe, NOe, and BAe I still have all have that grind. Probably a lot of uber HOGs out there with many more than me that could chime in on that. Limber up your fingers and do some Googling or searching on here and you can probably find some of the threads where Jerry talked about this and why he did it.

Also, if you want some history on the Heavy Hearts there is quite a bit in some old threads if you want to warm up the search engine. From what I recall, when these were first offered in 2006 2004 there were only 200 with regular scales and another 200 with magnum scales. I can't recall how many of the HOFSHs were offered.

ETA - FAL'ER, I'm up in Vancouver. If you ever make it up this way and want to check out some of the ergos with that asymetrical grind or see just how thick the HOFSH is, holler at me and I'd be glad to hook up with you.

Hey, thank you for the in depth and thoughtful response. It's your sale ad that got me even thinking about that model, truth be told I'd never heard of it before. I was pooling my resources to take that one off your hands, but I see it sold before I could raise all the funds. Ah well, you can't win em' all. I'll keep my eyes open and try to be ready next time. I was able to go back and look up some older threads last night and had read about the HHFSH being .270 and the HOFSH being .320.

I'd heard the term asym grind before, and always assumed the term was being used to refer to some sort of factory defect. Then I read your ad and you made it sound like a feature, which is why I asked the question above.
Anyway, I prattle on.
Thanks for the information folks.

All good bro, happy to a) help feed the addiction and b) share some of what I’ve picked up on here from some very helpful HOGs as you’ve also alluded to.

As mentioned, please holler if you’re ever up this way as the few I have left are all older and glad to feed the addiction even further. It’s too bad that Blade West and the Eugene show are on hiatus, I enjoyed meeting up with a lot of Busseholics back in the day.

!Correctamundo! However, in the Busse model designation, the G is not used. Therefore HOFSH.

https://web.archive.org/web/20161017112610/http://badmojo.net/heavy-ordnance-fusion-steel.html

I dunno if BadMojo gets the last word on this. When it was first offered in late 2004, it was listed as a Heavy Ordnance Fusion Steel Heart, or HOFSH, as you can see on the archived offer page from the Busse website: http://web.archive.org/web/20050131010452/http://www.bussecombat.com:80/knives/

However, in middle of December of '04, Jerry discovered that it was really Heavy Ordnance Grade and added the "G" to the acronym:

The latest and greatest acronym is HOG . . . . Heavy Ordnance Grade

Who knew? . . . I mean other than me? ;)

And since then, he's used the "G" in the the designation of the HOGFSH, as can be seen in these posts:

Well, the Active Duty was .150" thick and the Off Duty was .360" thick and the Heavy Duty fell somewhere in the middle. . . . So, If the Standard Fusion Steel Heart is .220" thick and the Heavy Ordnance Grade Steel Heart is .320" thick then I would guess that the "Heavy Heart" would fall somewhere in the middle!!!. . . Of course I'm just guessing so who knows . . . . ???? Skunk won't tell me anything!!! He and Garth have brewed this one up on their own and nobody's talkin'. . . .

Come on Skunk spill the beans. . . as for Garth, I'm cutting off his supply of Cabo Wabo until he starts talkin' ! ! ! !;)

Jerry

Good info John,

I’ve used both acronyms over the years, calling it both a HOGFSH and a HOFSH, but as long as I can keep calling it MINE I’ll be happy :p

Ps. Edited my previous post to correct the original offering date for all the HHs from 2006 to 2004, 2006 was when I picked up mine.

I'll do that, thanks for the kind offer.

Thanks for the info. I know the term Grade is used in the title. I don’t believe that initial is used in the full title designation. I prefer HOGFSH. But want to be as accurate as possible.

If I’m wrong on that, then everything that I’ve learned in regards to Bussekin is therefore suspect. Semi-kidding on that. I try to research as best I can. Just a little...Coronapocalpse Crazy by now.

I’ve got a puzzle for you guys...

I have a BG ASH with black coating, thick micarta handle scales, and red liners. The handle feels very large. Like bordering on “was this a mistake” territory...

My brother has the same knife but with G10 scales. It feels “normal” to me. Could the liners be adding this much sensation of thickness?

It’s almost like gripping a shovel handle. Most of the time when I’m using it I like it and it feels comfortable, but sometimes I just can’t get over how thick it feels. I’ve considered sanding the handle down about a million times. I’m just not convinced it would be worth it.

Anybody have one of these? What do you think of the grip? Would you sand it down some?
