The Busse Folder, How would it look like?

personally, i LOVE the large blade folders. 3.75-4" is optimal to me.

i have some very nice small folders that get zero pocket time because i just don't like small

I'm with ya there!! I have a LOT of pocket knives. About a year ago I went from a Benchmade Griptillian to a Cold Steel Rajah II and haven't looked back. There is just something comforting about a pocket knife that can take off limbs...

when i first saw the cubera, i was very disappointed. The only thing i really loved was the tip grind.

I always assumed that the Busse folder would have to be a flipper, simple because a flipper gives you somewhere to put a talon hole. When i saw that they had done a frame talon hole my first thought was "why... that's silly"... of course, it's easy to be a critic.

My thinking is that a 4" flipper with a proprietary lock and a titanium frame would be a must own.

Maybe with Busse's awesome CNC scales and custom shop options like g10 scales with bone bolsters

I don't understand. The way the both of you are talking about "it". It makes me think that "it" (An official Busse-made folder) already exists...

Does it? Has it maybe been a novelty at a show or what??

Thanks

Yes, there has been a Busse folder made.

Bravado does have (at least ;)) one. So does another HOG from my state. I have had the honor to fondle it a bit and have pictures of it as well. As I understand, there were several made and very few can make the claim to have handled one, let alone own one.

So how were the offered? Lottery, VIP customers.....?

EMT... read the thread I posted.

The knife only went to people Jerry trusted. Only ONE man has ever broken that trust.

Ohhhh ok...how mysterious!!

So Busse DID make a folder then. I bet they are worth a PRETTY penny, especially to some of the hogs around here.

So why not make more of them? I'm guessing there really is no reason....wait...where have I heard that before in regard to Busse's?? ;)

It's not mysterious. Very little about busse is as 'mysterious' as people claim. The one thing that I haven't really seen much info on is there military orders, which I have no reason to question. Everything else, the steel composition, the heat treat, the folder, it's all had enough information explained about it, or there's enough equivalent science available to make it really, honestly, not mysterious.

The person who sold it on ebay came out and explained the situation as such: Jerry gave a time span in the purchasing hand-shake contract that said that you weren't allowed to discuss, post pictures, or sell the folder during a set amount of time. That time expired and the guy had a very expensive folder that he didn't really want to keep for use. Within the bounds of the hand-shake contract he felt it was reasonable for him to be allowed to sell it, which he did. I don't know the exact terms discussed, but everything I saw showed that the guy really shouldn't have any negativity thrown at him. If you want to feel like your part of a 'mysterious' group, culture, or whatever that's fine. It creates a sense of community. But if your trying to understand the brand and it's various products, there's plenty of information available on it. Jerry's patent on the cubera's locking mechanism is also public domain via the major patent search websites.

"No reason" is different for a fixed blade than it is for a folder. They require notably different production logistics, as well as customer service. The machining has to be tooled and modified to do a much more minute scale, where all of the fixed blades are large with relatively few small machined elements. There are moving parts, pins, washers, lock up considerations, inspection protocol, quality control for a multible variables no present in a fixed blade, and the potential for considerably higher return rates for broken product. When people say "No reason" they are generally talking about knives that are built within the parameters of the pre-existing production model and capabilities. Busse isn't in the folder bussiness, even swamp rat wasn't with their folder, it was farmed out to BladeTech (as far as I understand). Theres a lot of reasons not to get into the folder bussines.

The flipper would have to be positioned where the locking mechanism is. The mechanism is built into a solid U shape of metal to increase strength and durability, it precludes the posibility of a flipper. I'd have to use one to see, but I beleive the back-bar lock creates what is essentially the same free-floating blade swing of the axis. Having a flip on an axis lock knife would be redundant, since the axis lock has to be pulled back to disengage the knife anyways, and the blade falls away from the handle into the open position with next to zero friction or momentum having to be applied to it.

One thing to think about.

Boss Busse recently said there was an INFI 2.0 coming out sometime. Higher hardness, and better edge retention. This would make for a great folder..........................Just saying!

I think it would be cool to get a folder or skinner in 64rc.

Does anyone know if the MUK had the standard 58-60rc? I find that 62+ is nice on a skinner, where edge retention is more important than toughness

The muck is standard, if I remember correctly.

I have a BAD and it does seem to hold an edge a bit longer than the Muck or CABS.

I would like to see more releases at high hardness, particularly in the slicers. I don't really need the toughness in that size. I treat them like thin slicers!

Infi 2.0? Ah man, now I have to go buy a whole new set of Busse's with that steel. My poor bank account :(

It looks pretty darned cool if you ask me. . . .but then again, I'm a bit prejudice toward the design. . . . .
