I've watched a few threads get locked in the Cantina over the past few days, seems like Howard is getting taxed in new and unusual ways. I was going to refrain from posting on the subject, being so new here, but I think I would like to add a comment now.

I see the Cantina as a small, smoke filled night club, like, say, in Casablanca. It would seem prudent to ask that contributors have at least a passing interest in HI Kukhuri in order to presume to hang out here. Other than that it is a real nice place to hang out and chat. It is turning out to be a very poor place to debate the "issues." I'm so glad to see that. I am also finally beginning to realize that arguing is for fools.

That's what it was originally all about, I think, is for HI fans to get together and talk amongst themselves on subjects other than HI kukri (which is for the main forum), without the noise from the rest of BF as a whole, like you'd get in General.

Problems lately I guess is with people cross-posting touchy issues between here and W&C, and the others who have such an axe to grind on some subjects that they leap to jump in the fray and don't even bother looking to see what forum they are in.

Usually, even with somewhat contentious issues, there's been no fray to jump into in the Cantina, and I hope to see it return to that -- a place we can pretty much discuss anything without anyone getting all hot and bothered.

Discussions with respected friends have great value. Viewpoints of those we know and like are easy to empathise with.

At the county fair, I didn't particularly care for "Whack A Mole" and I don't care for it much here either. Apparently it is needed sometimes when the atmosphere of respect is lost.

Could the key be respect? Respest may be corelated with already knowing people, but prior acquaintance is neither necessary nor sufficient for respect.

I posted about the movie Agora a few days ago. The agora was the public space where issues were debated. That movie shows how the debates turned nasty in ancient Alexandria, resulting in the destruction of the great library, the loss of much of the world's knowledge and history, and the killing by a mob of a great philosopher.

The sign above the cantina does say its a place for the HI crew to have off topic discussions. It has not been an agora. I could explore the possibility of getting the Cantina off the new posts listing. What are the thoughts on that?

i like the idea of "whack a troll"

i saw that movie about a year ago - great movie and well told story

May I ask what you mean when you say 'off the new posts listing'? It sounds to me like you're saying that you want to bar the Cantina from ever being posted on again. I don't want to overstep the boundaries, nor sound offensive, because you are cool, Howard Wallace, but are you saying you want to preserve the Cantina by making it impossible for anyone to comment, even those who love the Cantina and have been with it for such a long time that they value it as they would a good friend? I don't claim to know how others feel, but I have only been here a while, and, even though I started off kind of stupidly, this place has let me meet so many good people that it is almost unbelievable. I also don't want to repeat my disastrous pleas for ending the Christianity thread, so I will just state my opinion and be done with it: if you going to bar everyone from ever posting on the Cantina, one of the best things that ever happened to me, I would think it would be a not-so-great idea. But that is just me, I'm just a moody, melancholic-phlegmatic, Asperger-riddled, MDD pocked young man whose naivety gets the best of him almost all the time, while you are an older, more experienced, and Mod-graced individual. But I have a voice, and that voice asks you to reconsider if that is indeed your plan as moderator. I hope this possible disagreement does not get in the way of our friendship, nor make me sound more a fool than I already am. I hope I am simply mistaken. Thanks for hearing me out, Howard Wallace, and hopefully, I am greatly mistaken in my perception. See you all later metaphorically, and peace.

In the dark blue bar at the top of every screen there is a button labeled "new posts." If you hit this button you get search results for the new posts across all of bladeforums, with a couple of exceptions. Many people use that button instead of popping into a particular forum.

I was asking for thoughts as to the wisdom of excluding cantina posts from the "new posts" search results.

That's a great idea Howard.
I think Cpl's comment is dead on, they probably posted before they even realized in which forum they were posting.
I think people that should be posting here are going to stumble across it just fine without its new posts being listed on the front page.

I agree that might be a good idea - HI cantina would probably mostly just get posts from people who frequent this area - i still think when someone drops in with wanting to start that type of stuff right off the bat then it should be nipped in the bud.

usually the first clue someone is looking to start trouble is when they start off by saying something like "well i dont want to cause trouble, but"

I am still kinda new to this place but i really like the mostly easy going atmosphere

Howard, I like the idea of taking it off the new posts list. I think most of the people trolling for trouble aren't even aware of this little corner of the forum. They see some tasty morsel in the new posts list, regardless of where it is, and pounce on it. The controversial nature of their post then guarantees that the thread remains in the new post list. I'm pretty new to the Cantina, but I like the backwoods aspect of it.

very well said

Yeah, I'd be totally cool with us flying under the radar. I certainly don't want to see the place turned into an exclusive's club, but there has been an influx of troll-like behavior coming from folks just wanting to spout of on some topic.

The Cantina will always be an open and welcoming place. But like most of the best holes in the walls, you should know where to look to find it;)

Howard, I think it's a great idea to take the Cantina off the New Posts list. That way, people would have to come here on purpose and would have no excuse for bad behavior.

Okay, cool, that sounds like a good idea then. Forget all that worthless stuff I said, count me in. Peace.

Something like this?

You should do what seems right to you and the regulars.

On the other hand, it would be a pity for new folks to miss out on the Cantina. This is a fine little joint with an interesting crew.

At the top of Syambunath hill, not too far from the big stupa, is a restaurant with a little door. Rajesh, Red Flower and I went through that door, through a dark kitchen, up a flight of stairs, and onto the rooftop restaurant. At the top was a wide and expansive view of Kathmandu. We had a great time there, enjoying each others company, some snacks and drinks, and the view.
