The Captain's knife.

Great story, I'm about 10 minutes from Cambridge and my brother a fellow BF'er lives there.

There's a lot more to the Eastern Shore than Ocean Sh!tty. Pete, wish I would've made it a point to get to Chincoteague when you were down there. Just complete opposite of OC, and I really enjoyed myself there.

I was in ocean city on memorial day weekend 2007. I went on a trawler thursday night and we landed early saturday morning. I was back on my porch drinking a cold beer in Chincoteague in 2 hours. There was nothing in OC that I wanted or needed to see. The job I had spoiled my enjoyment of Chincoteague. I think if I was down there commercial fishing I would have had more fun.

It's too bad you didn't make it down there while I was there SHS, we could have had a few cold ones, watched the rabbits and deers in my yard, and tried to catch a few fish. If you ever get up to Mass. and the Cape Ann area, look me up, and we'll have a couple beers. The lobsters are on me :D

Your stories are always captivating Carl, thank you!Are you sure you don't have a little bit of Bard in you?;):)

I'm calling from on the road, what do you drink?

:D

Even though I gripe about OC, I just committed to a wk down there. Okay, I got a good deal on an apt, but still. Going to spend most of my time down Chincoteague and Crisfield if I am lucky.

Carl, I loved that story. I also grew up on the Chesapeake (in Baltimore), and I work on ships & have always loved maritime history. This tale was right up my alley! Thank you!

If you have the time, you really should try to do a hike into the Assateague Island backcountry. If you park at the last lot and take the inner dune path, it gets interesting. Just take mosquito repellent and water. Or if you can borrow or rent a canoe, try the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The salt water marshes are made for canoeing.

Carl.

My sister and her boyfriend went deep into the Assateague park last year, some beautiful spots back there. I plan on spending a day out there. Going down last wknd of July, first wk of Aug though. Fat people don't do so well in the oppressive heat.

I have some photos of the wild ponies on Assateague. I used to go into the nature preserve from Chincoteague Island and just walk around. Chincoteague and Cedar Key FL are my "Happy Places" :D

I lived in a blue duplex off Deep Hole Road. There were deer and rabbits in my yard. I had a nice big porch where I could sit and watch the animals and drink beer. I had a couple of big snakes living under the porch and there were always toads in the grass. I had no cell phone service and the internet access was spotty at best. It was paradise!!!

One thing I wanted to do that I never got the chance was to visit Tangier Island in Chesapeake Bay. Other than that with the job that I had, I got to see some of the small coastal towns of Eastern Shore VA. Onancock, Wachapreague, Belle Haven and Davis Wharf were a few of them.

The Fried Oysters at Chatties lounge were some of the best I have had and I had a crush on the bartender Ruby.

Dammm! Another great story Carl, Geez I love these tales. Did someone mention a possible book? I'd be very interested in that for sure. Any details?
Thanks again Carl!

"It's an old custom. A coin for a knife, or the knife will cut the friendship." the captain said.

I was taught this tradition when I was a very young boy/man. I'm 44 years old now and to this day my friends and I never gift each other knives without a coin being traded. Most of the times it's a penny or whatever is within arms reach but there is ALWAYS a coin involved!
