The Case Knife Opinion

You can buy better knives than Case for the money. There are plenty of more practical knives. I have one that I use regularly and love it however. It has nothing on the performance of my Sebenza and other such knives, but I enjoy it for what it is: a classic! I enjoy it the same way an enthusiast enjoys an old Porche 356. A 356 has NOTHING on todays cars, but you enjoy it for what it is: a beautiful classic with an elegant simplicity. Case knives are VERY easy to sharpen (to being RAZOR sharp) and maintain, they're attractive knives, the blades on a trapper are very handy, and they are pretty non-threatening to sheeple. They don't hold much of an edge, but for light work they do the job, I just keep mine touched up.

When I go off to the hunting camp, I usually carry an ammo box with a few knives and sharpening stones.

One knife that never fails to go in that box is a 1971 case folding hunter that was my Dad's "big" knife. The kids will skin squirrels & rabbits, dress ducks with whatever they have, but will use that folding hunter to cut through bones or for heavier jobs - deer, etc. Are there better knives for the job? yes, but that one has been carving up critters in my family since I was a little kid. I guess I like it because when I was younger, you only broke out the "big" knife after a really good hunt.

In my friend's camp kitchen, there are two yellow handle Case CV trappers that slice, dice, and stir and serve up about everything that gets cooked at that camp.

I have traditional patterned knives from :

Canal St
Case
Bull Dog
Hen & Rooster
Henckels (Boker)
Camillus
Schrade Old Timer
Rough Rider
Steel Warrior
S&W
Puma

I listed them by rank, in my opinion Canal St , Case and Bulldog rank in the top of what I own ( as far as fit and finish).

Canal St is a very well made product and the Gunstock pattern I just received is a work of art. Case has a similar level of fit and finish very close to Canal , but just not as good ... again IMO and my examples.

A Hen & Rooster Sowbelly I just received is also very nice. But not as good as the three above, the fit and finish is good but the springs aren't consistent in strength between the three blades

At the bottom a Puma Medici ( current production) the fit and finish is pretty bad. I like the pattern but the workmanship is not as good as the others.
