The cheap list

Lots of options in this area but I’ll only suggest things I’ve owned, used, and enjoyed. I’m more of a fixed blade guy, so my list will be heavily weighted in that category. In addition to the Kabar Dozier and Ontario Rat, both I would recommend, I came up with the following.

SAK Camper or Hiker models can be had $25 give or take.

Any of the Buck Slim Selects (110/112) can be had around $25-35.

Buck Paklite Select series of fixed blades that are $40-50.

Buck also has the Bucklite series of fixed blades for $25-$40. All the Bucks listed are USA made and of course the SAK is Swiss made.

Becker Knife & Tool, made by KaBar, offers the BK11 and BK14 around $50 and the BK13 is around $30-$40, all USA made.

You can also find ESEE Izula and Candiru for around $50, USA made.

Brisa/Enzo necker model 70 is another good option for $25-$50ish, depending on scales, made in Finland.

That’s all I can think of right now but may add more later.

Marttiini, Finland. Numerous models $15-25
Okapi Biltomg
Okapi ratchet knife. South Africa. These are hard to find as the manufacturer has changed
Joker, Spain. Lock ring knives. $20
Antonini Old Bear Italy. $25
Dexter Russell Green River 4215 USA $20

I don't count them as cheap, so here's a couple of my "inexpensive" ones.
An Opinel #07. I also have an 06 & 08. (France, $16-$18)

And a Buck 110LT (USA) that I got for $15 from one of the big online knife places before Christmas, At that price, I had to get two.

There's also a KaBar Dozier (Taiwan $26) & a Buck 112 Slim Select (USA $40) on the way. During the Summer months I tend to set aside my bigger heavyweights & carry smaller, lighter knives.

Edited to add price & country of origin. And there's always an Alox SAK in my pocket.

I just meant, The blue collar worker isnt usually bent on expensive knives. I know quite a few who buy what works, because if it gets broken or lost, They arent out 200$. Just gives a good list of variety for those who cant afford to drop 100s because of various reasons.

Also, Im not saying you cant list chinese origin knives, You can list what ever country you want, But considering the market is full to the gills with chinese knives, Its nice to have options that arent from such a source. Some prefer to steer clear of these chinese knives all together. Just gives options to those who are looking for it.

Yeah, I think there are a few couple of us who have some ideas.

Left side, top to bottom, Rough Ryder Denim Micarta Sunfish, Marble's G. I. Jack, A. G. Russell Lockback Barlow, and another Rough Ryder. I think it's called the Whittlin' Jack? All from The Country in Question.

Right side, Camillus Electrician, Victorinox Alox Electrician, KaBar Electrician, and Rough Ryder Denim Micarta Electrician.

All under $50 USD, although the exact prices escape me. No, the Alox pattern is $55, if you buy straight from Victorinox.

The Camillus was "New Old Stock", from the auction site. Made in the States, when Camillus still did that.

The KaBar was also from the auction site. It has more stories than I ever will, and a screwdriver blade that was made for tougher fingernails than mine.

The mention of the Dexter Fish 4" knife, which I've seen in the $12 range, reminds me of the world of folks who use their employer supplied knives all day, every day, repetitiously, in extreme haste, often more-or-less in one place (meat packing plants, commercial kitchens, field pickers, bale busters, warehouse workers, fish mongers, food stall workers, etc). Places where "cost is king".

Here are some brands that come to my mind, regardless the country of origin:
- Dexter knives by the trainload
- Chicago Cutlery
- Mercer kitchen knives
- Sanelli knives
- Ontario Old Hickory
- WinCo Softek
- F Dick
- CS Scalper & Slock Master models
Or check out restaurant supply stores like some of us cheap old farts. 😉

And for those disinclined to stray into the kitchen:
- Smith & Wesson SWAT knives

I'm new to knife collecting, I like Bush craft, the outdoors and am into carving.
I recently brought two knives, both flipper knives. One is an MTec USA, the other an Elk ridge. I realise these are cheap budget knives and am ok with that as I slowly build my collection. I first brought the M tec which was very cheap, then I went for a more expensive Elk ridge. Can I just say, in my humble opinion the Mtec quality was outstanding! then the Elk ridge arrived and even my untrained eye could see this really was cheap trash! Any opinions on both makes please? Also, could anyone advise me on other good budget brands?
Lastly, it was VERY difficult to buy flipper knives here in England as I think they are illegal or borderline illegal? I'm so envious when I see them readily available in the US.
Thanks Guys

i am a Brit who emigrated to Canada over 20 years ago. Knife ownership and carry in the UK is extremely restrictive. There is an on-line store run-out of Barry in South Wales. They flag knives that are UK legal. Basically if memory serves they need to be non-locking and blades less than 3 inches. They sell flippers too with recommendations/reviews/articles.
