The chicken or the egg question for knives

I'm the manager of a manufacturing facility. All the guys (and gals) carry a knife because they are frequently needed every day. My wife works with me and carries a Spyderco Ladybug in her back pocket, and has a fixed blade Skyline in her work area. When I hire a new employee, I always recommend they carry a good quality pocket knife, so they won't need to borrow someone else's.

Mostly the first, it is always good to have a knife even if you don't need it. However.......I do use it to open things I could just as easily open without it just to use my blade!

I only use my EDC when I really have to. I just like having a knife on me.

I carry them because I use one or more knives every single day. I've carried a knife for so long, I feel naked without one - like when I have to go to the courthouse and they won't let you in with one. Since I carry at least 1 fixed blade and 2 locking folders everyday, it's a PITB to strip the sheath off the belt before going in. Then, finally on a trip in, I had had enough. I simply took the knife out of the sheath and stuck it between the seats and went through security with the sheath on my belt. That's when the security deputies had kittens.

"What's that?"
"A knife sheath."
"Why do you have it?"
"To carry my knife."
"Where's the knife?
"In the truck."
"Why's it in the truck."
"Because y'all have a sign on the door that says no knives in the courthouse."
"You can't do that."
"Do what?"
"Take a sheath in the courthouse."
"Why not?"
"It's in the law."
"Whose law, Stalin's?"
"Not, the judge."

Don't know where this would have ended up because a Deputy SGT came by (who I know well) and he asked what was going on. When I told him about our little conversation, he just looked at the deputies guarding the entry and said "God, my goats are smarter than you 2." and waved me in. I have no clue what he told them after I left, but I haven't had the same problem since. :D

I routinely need to cut things as part of my job, yes. I also get a lot of packages in the mail, so yeah, I actually DO need some sort of cutting instrument on a daily basis. Sure, scissors would work too, but it's easier to carry a knife clipped in my pocket than to lug around a pair of scissors everywhere I go.

I can say that I never go any where with out a knife, even going so far as to go back for it once when I got half way to town only to discover I'd forgotten my knife. That being said, I actually do need a knife on a daily basis for at least one mundane task (opening a package, breaking down a box etc).

Both .. I carry my knives because I need to cut stuff , I cut stuff because I like to use my knife to cut stuff , sometimes even what Im cutting needed to be cut .
People here know I have a knife of some sort on me .. usually it happens , " Oh dam ,need a knife
someone pipes up with " Get Karl he has a knife"
I go do what need to be done , then the questions " why do you carry a knife ?"
the conversation usualy ends with " Oh well I know who to call on if I need something cut then .."
I dont understand people .

Both, actually. I carry a knife because of its utility value, and I love using it. So sometimes I'll be on the lookout for situations when I'll be able to do something useful with it.

I start with the first and progressed to the second. I start buying knives cause I needed them for hiking/camping. Then I got so into knives that now I go hiking/camping so I can use my knives! :D

Same as Moses above. I carry a Leatherman Charge Ti because the tools are handy at the pharmacy. Fixing medical equipment, printers, cutting open zip ties on drug containers etc. So my job makes it useful to carry. Could I use other things like a tool box and box cutter? Sure. But the leatherman currently covers all that and then some.
But my fix blades and camp knives I make excuses to go out and use.
When I'm wearing dress clothes and not working, I carry a case stockman. In street clothes I carry a folder with a lock. Regardless if I find a use for them or not. But with those I definitely don't look for things to use them on.

I re-started carrying a knife because I had things to cut and no handy implement around to do it.
Got tired of breaking pens, or the skin on my knuckles, to tear down boxes.
Ever try to slice a tomato with scissors, keys or a pen?
I put one on my salad nearly every day.
My wife still gives me the "why do you do that?" look when I split open a package for her. I do it because I don't want M&M's all over the floor...
