The Chinese already beating reporters and destroying their photos

Another reporter (British) beaten and arrested by Chinese police today.
This one was trying to report on a demonstration.

DIJ, do you have a link or did you see it on a local TV station or read it in a newspaper?

The Chinese govt thinks that we see them as poor, unsophisticated rice farmers. They don't seem to know that we view them as an oppressive communist, dictatorial hellhole.
They actually thought putting on a big, expensive show would "change their image" with us.
Somehow, they need to be made to understand that they did not change their image, but reinforced it by arresting American protestors, beating journalists, destroying their photos, etc..
Their image is even worse now, I'd say, with their gestapo-esque image reaffirmed.

You need to check again. They've scored a big success with these olympics, whether we like it or not. The world community was very impressed from everything I've read.

Many of us in the UK absolutely cringed with embarassment at the un-British, tacky-garbage awfulness of the "London" contribution to the closing ceremony.
In contrast to which it has to be said the Chinese performance / presentation was superb.

It's funny you should mention it. My wife and I watched that bit where they did the flag handoff and she commented on how that guy looked "sloppy and a mess with no belt". It sort of looked like Gordon Brown was chuckling at him as well. I didn't think it was a big deal, but I guess I could see how it would have been a bit of a slip up.

The Chinese put on a great show, but that's not too surprising. If you have a pool of over a billion to get "volunteers" from, and 4 years to practice then you are bound to have a nice performance.

Who is this "world community," and with what were they impressed? Sure, they built a real nice stadium. They put on a very elaborate show -- those parts of it that weren't computer-generated fakery, anyway. They performed well in the Olympics -- in part because of corrupt judges who award gold medals to gymnasts who fall down, and thanks to competitors who are underage -- thanks to the home court advantage. They even did us the favor of having a prettier little girl lip-sync in place of an uglier child, because, hey, who wants to see ugly children? Why, they even cut down on the life-choking smog that holds the city in its grip, by telling people they couldn't drive. I know I'm impressed.

Nobody who's at all familiar with modern-day China thought they couldn't put on an impressive show. Athens managed it, after all, so why shouldn't the large, industrialized nation that is China be able to accomplish it -- especially with the force of its totalitarian government behind the effort? I mean, sure, China blocked iTunes to the entire country when Olympic athletes downloaded the album "Songs for Tibet" a few times... but, come on, wouldn't you block a music service to an entire nation of one billion people because the service hosts a song or ten critical of your regime? That seems perfectly reasonable, doesn't it?

Oh, yeah, big win for China. We're all wide-eyed.
