I have long had an old Buck 124 and decided to look around for a replacement sheath. That is when I noticed that the blade length seemed to be migrating. We have talked about the evolution of handles and blade steel, but what blade lengths have been used in the Buck 124 Frontiersman, and can the knives be dated by these changes? So far I have seen the 124 listed with 6-1/4", 6-3/4", and 7" blade lengths. What's the story on this?

on custom shop the old one, wasn't it whatever length ya wanted an extra fee per inch deal on the blade? seemed to have read that here somewhere.

on production ones, never paid attention before......in to learn on this.....

I believe the handles have gotten longer too.

jbmonkey jbmonkey At one time you could order special blade lengths. Although I’ve only seen 1 picture of one.

I wonder if how the blade was measured has anything to do with the variations in length? Overall length and handle length is bound to be different given the long history of the model but half a inch is really not a lot on a big knife. I've noticed handle size differences is influenced by the photos. I haven't held very many at all especially early ones but how a pic is taken can make a big difference in 'looks'..

Fair enough. I measured mine from the blade tip to the front face of the guard.

Does anyone on this forum have an example and can you share the measurements with us?

not2sharp, that same era model of mine measures 6 5/8". I think in a catalog description I have read it was described as having a 7" blade. DM

Whatever the blade length they're still pretty cool!

Certainly! But, what does the blade length say about the knife. The impression thus far on this thread is that the older squared handled version was longer, that the length was reduced by 1/4” when the handle was made rounder with the switch to 420HC, and reduced by another 1/8” in the 5160 version.

We need to share more examples to see if any of that holds true.

I have not seen a prior discussion on the changing blade length. I use to think that they were all 7”.
